Decals on things with holes?

I have a part which is basically a cylinder (disk) with a hole in the middle. If I add full face decal to the end of the  cylinder it is possible to put it right in the middle and it displays correctly. If I add the hole then it's not possible to align it to the middle, even if I type the numbers in manually it jumps so the centre is one side or the other of the hole. If I add the decal first and then add the hole, the decal distorts, see screenshot below.

As a work-around I've used a new "material" which does work but I wonder if it was possible to make this work as a decal?

This is basically how they have worked since the beginning. Since decals snap to the face, if the center of the face is missing(a hole) then there is no snap point for it to be snapped to.

To workaround it:

1. Make a patch body on the face with a hole
2. Decal that patch body

3. If the patch body is too visible, RMB and set custom opacity to zero.

Thanks, the patch workspace is new to me. Just watching some videos.

As mentioned I went for slightly different approach. I created a new material as that did not have any limitations on where I could position the image, although positioning and scaling the image was a little bit fiddly.

Hmm, more like a surface body that is the same as the "original" body - sans hole. But hey if your method is working, that is fantastic!
