Custom Form Mill overlays on all other tools

A while back I created a 4mm radius Roman Ogee style Form Mill for use within Fusion 360 CAM. After defining it as a Milling Tool, it started overlaying over all my other tools. I am attaching a screenshot (the overlay happens only in the Tool Editing window).

tool overlayed.png

As you can see in the above image, the preview should look like on the right hand side, but the Form Mill is now over it. This makes it very hard to define new tools (by duplicating and editing), since I can't see the actual shape while editing.

I have removed the Form Mill from my library - did not solve the issue. I have removed the fusion file I used to define the tool - also did not solve the issue.

Any suggestions?

Hi @Jacotheron

Thanks for posting! This is certainly unexpected - so far, I've been unable to reproduce this issue by creating a new form mill. It is too bad that you don't have the form mill present anymore - if you do have any old tool libraries that may include that tool please send a copy my way.

I'd also like to have a look at the file shown in your screenshot - I'd like to see what the tool shown in your screenshot looks like on my end. Please share that file with me.

To move forward, I think we may be able to resolve this issue by trying the suggestions below:

  1. Close Fusion 360 and delete all the XML files from the filepath here: C:\Users\<USERNAME>\AppData\Local\Fusion 360 CAM\Settings. Restart Fusion 360 and launch the tool library - it may take some time to launch initially as the XML files will need to be rewritten.
  2. If this does not work, please confirm that the problem does not persist through a clean uninstall/reinstall of Fusion 360.

I hope this helps! Please let me know if you continue to see problems.

Thank you for the reply. I figured it must be some unique set of circumstances that made this form tool persist through so many attempts to get it fixed.

I have deleted the XML files you mentioned, started Fusion again, but the issue persisted. I then did the clean uninstall and re-install of Fusion, and afterwards, still the old form tool is overlaid over any tool I edit. My tool library is currently using the Cloud option (so that I do not loose any data/settings, should something happen to my computer), so it may be that it is somehow embedded itself in the library.

I am attaching my tool library here (as it was exported, maybe it contains the overlay that can help someone figure it out and remove it; turns out it can't be attached - link https://www.dropbox.com/s/dv31szss4gxy81t/fusion360-tool-export.tools?dl=0 [link may stop working in the future]), the specific one in the screenshot is Whiteside's 6210 Surfacing bit (3 flutes, 1" diameter on a 1/4" shaft). All of the tools was defined by me, and may not be extremely accurate, but gets the job done.

Hi @Jacotheron

Thank you for sharing the tool library. The shared library shows the same problem behavior that you've described on my end - I also noticed that it makes the previews for tools in other libraries incorrect as well.

I've been unable to resolve this on my end - even after deleting the problem library you attached, I still have problems with the tool previews in other libraries. I've logged CAM-11373 with the development team to investigate further and will keep you posted with any new information.

I don't believe the form mill is still present in the library you shared, but please confirm this. If it is there, please let me know the tool number.

It does appear that the tools are previewed correctly when creating toolpaths and that the toolpath is generated based on the true (numerically entered) dimensions of the tool. I believe this is a cosmetic issue, but it is certainly not easy to create tools using the preview.

Have you tried the clean uninstall/reinstall?

I'd also like to gather your diagnostic log files if you could attach them to this forum thread.

Feel free to reach out whenever you have questions - we are happy to assist.

I think you can work around this problem by exporting that library in ".hsmlib" format, deleting the library, the reimporting the .hsmlib into a new library.

We're still trying to figure out how this could be happening.

Thanks for reporting it.

Hi Jeff

The export to ".hsmlib" before deleting the library worked. While having the library deleted, I tested a few of the files that used some of the bits, and when editing them they now displayed correctly. I then imported the exported library and it is still clean.

Thank you very much.

Paul: The offending form mill is not part of the library, I deleted it when I found the issue, hoping it would solve the issue. Yes, it is cosmetic only (toolpaths are unaffected). This issue remained after a clean uninstall and reinstall. I have generated the log files, maybe they can help in preventing this issue from showing up again.
