Cannot extrude from a curved surface

Hello,

Im trying to extrude a rib around the cut-out of this model. I selected 'from object' and 'join' as can be seen in the screenshot. When I try this, I get an error 'fail to project profile to remote surface' non of the other óperation'options work.

I have tried to extrude a simple cube from this surface as well, and this worked exactly as expected. I have also had succes on trying this operation in Inventor. However, fusion doesn't let me do it. Is this still a shortcomming, or am I just missing something here?

For reasons, I can't upload the original file. However, I made a quick sketch of the problem which is essentially the same situation.
