Hi, I have a 3d body. For reference is a rock drill cone, google "rock drill cone". I am putting holes in it at different levels. When I get to the holes on the cone that are on an angle and I use"make hole" it works. I click on the hole and the click the bottom plane and I enter the height and it looks OK. My problem is when I click OK the hole position moves up if I dimension it from the bottom and down if I dimension it from the top. I can't figure out why it's doing that.
Can you please post the file. One work around could be to do a tangent plane and put in the circle place you want the hole or put a point if you want to use the hole tool
Hello @stew985,
Welcome to Fusion 360 community forum. Thanks for posting!
As I understand, you are trying to create holes in the sloped face of the body and you want to put them in the desired position.
You chose the sloped face of the body as the face to create the hole in. In the next step, you added the edge of the bottom (or the top), horizontally oriented face of the body as the reference (see the attached screenshot). By doing that, you were able to define the distance between the center point of the hole on the sloped face and the referenced edge.
As a result of changing this distance, the location of the hole changes. This way you can put the hole in the desired position in reference to the edge of the top or the bottom face.
Should you want to position the hole randomly, you can move it by dragging the center point. An alternative might be creating a sketch on a tangent plane that @aaronkcap mentioned.
You can find a description of the Hole dialog box here.
If this answers your question, please let us know by marking this post as a solution. Enjoy using Fusion 360!
Best regards,
Yes this is what I did but the issue is that when I click OK it moves. I have attached 3 more screen shots in sequence.
Hello @stew985,
Thanks a lot for the update and explanation!
Does the issue occur while referencing the two specific planes that you mentioned or every single time you define a hole and use a reference object?
Would you mind sharing your design with me, so that I can reproduce the problem?
Thanks a lot!
Hello @stephen,
sorry for getting back to you so late.
I was able to reproduce the error in your design, as well as in some other simple designs I created.
Positioning the hole with a reference seems to be working correctly if the plane one puts the hole in is perpendicular to the referenced plane, but the hole is indeed relocated for any other angle after confirming the distance.
I am going to log it in with our development team.
For now, you can consider using the workaround @aaronkcap provided to achieve a precise geometry. Should you need any help with the workaround, let me know.
Best regards,
