Multi axis finishing strategies or not?

Morning, we have recently invested in some 5 axis kit and all is going on the 3+2 stuff but im after a bit of help with regards to finishing this part.

Ryan_Fab_0-1674122077752.png

I was looking for a multi axis path that blends well to give a good finish. I have no idea whether thats optimal, Ive zero experience in this area.

We are working on VF4SS with a trunion table, it will be setup as above.

Im open to any suggestions,

Cheers

Define "good finish", as that can be interpreted as a "mirror" or "eh, good enough". What's the material and quantity to machine?

Hi Seth, good question.

This is a handle which will be mounted and trialled.

I dont want too much witness of overlapping paths, Im ocd, I like seemless. I appreciate this model may not lend itself to that by the way it has been constructed.

Its a one off part in aluminium, it will be brushed afterwards.

Gotcha. As soon as I wrap up this project I'm in (in the next couple hours) I'll dive into your part. I think we can come up with something suitable

Sorry for the delay, getting my machine running and working on this toolpath took longer than expected.

As a general rule, your best finishes are going to be obtained thru 3+2, and not from full-5x toolpaths. There are exceptions to this, and of course, sometimes you have no other option. But, 9 times out of 10, you're going to be best served by indexing and locking, perform machining, repeat.

First off, I strongly encourage you to implement Machine Configurations. Seeing as you have a Haas, this is a perfect fit for you (we have loads of machine models, all ready for machine simulation).

Secondly, you're going to want to turn on the Preview flag for "Blend", which is a really versatile toolpath. From there on out, you'd use Tool Orientation to align your tool to desired angles:

As soon as the file is exported, I'll update this response (seems to be taking an absurd amount of time)

Fantastic, looks great Seth, can't wait to run it in the morning.
The blend path is exactly what I was looking for!

I should use machines, I do on the odd occasion but I'll try to make it my
standard process.

I have one question on the blend, the tool orientation tilt angle
you've chosen, is that purely to stop the tool cutting on the point or is
there something else?

Yes, you'll always get a better finish if you're using anything other than the exact center tip of the tool (surface footage approaches near zero)

Just so your clear; these are example toolpaths. I did not put any effort into speeds and feeds or anything of the sort..

Hi Seth, Im running into something odd Im wondering if youve seen it or know of a fix.

Ive added a machine to my original file and copied across your blend commands. The first one generates fine but when trying to add any after, I get this

Yeah its on. Its odd because I can keep playing arounf with the file you sent and I dont get that error but on my file I get it every time. Something just occured, could it be something to do with the machine ive added? Ill take it out and test

Okay, let's start with a couple items:

1) Turn off In-Process Stock (on the Utilities tab)

If that solves it, turn it back on, but also turn this on

2)

Are you trying to copy/paste the toolpath that I created, or are you creating one anew and getting that error?

So initially I was just pasting them over and the first one worked but then none thereafter.

Now Ive just created my own and it worked.... But I didnt like the look of it. Your paths are nice and smooth and even but mine looks like this

Ryan_Fab_0-1674217610256.png

so I changed the stepover from about 0.35 to 0.25 and it gave me the error again.

Ive tried other step overs,  bigger and smaller but all produce the error?

I thought it may be that with the your path Id copied over your tool, so i switched that out with one from my library and still the results are the same. Error unless stepover is 0.35
