timeline / collapsing the dependency graph

timeline / collapsing the dependency graph

Two big / related things annoy me about the timeline. It'll roll back the clock when I don't want it to when I try to edit a sketch, and it won't roll back the clock when I make a change that should just get propagated backwards.

Both of these can be fixed very easily by replacing the simple sequential timeline with a (user guided) collapsed dependency graph.

If someone edits a sketch and actually make changes to the design history, they should be able to do so.. manually. The default should be to add a new layer to the sketch to the present (as defined by where they've put the cursor).

Similarly, if someone (as I just did) wants to move an object that was inserted then duplicated, F360 should note that moving that object can be propagated all the way back to the beginning and either only move one of the two mirrored versions or move the initial one that will also move the duplicate (as I intended).

The easy way to do this is to look at the dependency graph and set things up so each change gets propagated as far back in time as possible so long as the sequence is retained.

Personally I like the idea of replacing the timeline entirely with a dependency graph that flows from left to right and shows everything that commutes in the same «slice» (you could flatten those down to get something one dimensional like the current timeline but there should be an easy way for users to navigate it)
