When Editing a Rect-Pattern of Features, Save Previous Selection

Whenever I go to edit a pattern where I've needed to suppress certain instances, the pattern by default has every choice selected. Makes it very tedious to add exceptions to the pattern. Can we have the pattern tool preserve the previous selection?

And while we're at it, can we make the arrows/handles not be right on top of a check box?Screenshot 2019-09-22 11.15.16.png

Also should be able to suppress the initial/first instance in any pattern. As it is now, that's the ONLY item that can't be suppressed except for the one that is inevitably blocked by the arrow.
