This idea is still accepted, there have been more urgent tasks that have come up and pushed this out a bit. It is at the top of our backlog and work will beginning on it soon.
I'll add my voice again to say that this is just about the #1 time waster and user interface irritation in Fusion for me. As madcat.zero points out above, trying to use components to organize the browser doesn't work, and doing so muddies the concept of what components are for. I hope your backlog shrinks such that this can get changed soon!
Within any particular browser level (node), my guess is the order entities appear should be fully reorderable by criteria such as name or modification date without affecting model structure in any way. This should not be true when traversing bowser levels up or down the hierarchy because hierarchy is exactly tied to dependencies and hierarchies in the model itself that the browser (along with the timeline as co-partner) represents.
Theory: model=timeline+browser+user parameters+materials (+ comments?). (For future PMI implementation need to add + name, + meta tag(s), + comments, + design intent indicators.) Oh and part=model+CAM setups+black magic!
So a fully reorderable browser, including hierarchy, is likely not in the cards since browser hierarchy is so intimately tied to Fusion's grand workflow theory.
Given the above, it might be possible to do some of what you are looking for with minimal development time: Add the possibility to create browser-level folders that can be sorted, along with any bare entities also just within the same browser level, by criteria such as name, dates, or meta tags. Such folders could not be dragged up and down the hierarchy, as I understand Fusion, due to the deep Fusion plumbing reworking that I suspect would be required.
Just adding some more fuel to this idea. Not a day goes by without me developing an assembly and me thinking to myself "when will the fusion gods grace me with folder management capabilities?!".
I just posted a downloadable project to forum and got response concerning my folder structure and was confused because I have repeatedly posted request that there be folders in browser to begin with .
The responses were from Autodesk employees .
I haven't responded yet because I don't know what to say other than "What Folders and Where"
Fusion just creates this quagmire of "Folders" in browser as I work and I seem be be stuck with them . I have tried my best to create any thing resembling a folder structure but have so far been unable to do so .
I have no way to organize anything at all and when I am looking for something it takes forever and by the time I find it I have forgotten what I intended to do with it in the first place and this is no exaggeration .
I have never worked with a program that had no way to organize the content , It's as if I have a home office and need to store my paper work so I keep a one file cabinet at one neighbors house and another at another neighbors house and they don't even know about them and when I need to store some work I sneak into their house to keep my work there . I don't bother to try and organize any of it since that would make no sense either .
Wanted to provide an update on this, work is currently being done for browser folders. Browser folders for bodies will be done first followed by folders for components. Based off of our release schedule we are targeting bodies by the end of the year, but might be slightly delayed due to teams holiday schedule.
It's a nice improvement in the F360 2017 to have folders for Bodies!
Though it would be awesome to have folders for all elements, not just bodies.
Assembly still can't be organized. Of course, the separate parts could be put in sub-assemblies (components), but it seems like a workaround rather than a legit technique.
While this thread deals with the problems of a cluttered browser when working with hundreds of entities (components in my case), there is no discussion here about making the browser window easier to use.
For example, it does NOT respond to any keyboard keys such as the Home or End key to quickly scroll to the top or bottom of the list. And since all new Components are added to the bottom of the list, every time I make a sub-component (folder), I have to grab the scrollbar and drag it to the bottom. Then I have to go up the list and find the components I want to drag them back down into the sub-component folder. Then drag the sub-component folder up the list to a more logical position
Perhaps there is a better way that I'm not aware of but with 19 pages of components in the browser, it's very difficult to manage.
There is also no Page Up or Page Down key function. With the scrollbar so narrow, it's hard to drag it.
Also, dragging a folder to the top or bottom border to get the window to auto-scroll doesn't work very well.
Why not make this window horizontally expandable to provide multiple columns like the Windows Explorer "list" view. I'm sure most people these days have multiple monitors so having this browser off to the side of your work area would allow it to be expanded to the full width of the side monitor for managing large projects.
The Bodies Group feature is great if you have a lot of bodies but does not help me with hundreds of components from an import.
Finally, some additional shortcuts such as shift-clicking on an arrow to Expand All or Collapse All would also be welcome.
Another cool feature would be to use Shift-Up or Shift-Down arrow keys to move an entity or group of entities up and down the list. Use Control-Up/Down arrow keys to move the selected entities to the top or bottom of the list.
Looks like you have been waiting for 2+ years for folders but the complexity of adding these in the proper way continues to delay the roll out. In the meantime, designing the browser window to work like an Explorer or Finder window would go a long way towards easing the problem without any impact to core Fusion 360 code. This is just UI changes!
@cekuhnen: If you start with a component you have a main timeline containing all entries and a filtered timeline for the component. If you do it afterwards you have all the movement actions in your timeline.
