Use stock from previous operation in new setup

Use stock from previous operation in new setup

In CAM, I should have the option of using the remaining stock from the previous operation as I create subsequent operations. This way I define the stock on my first operation, and I can see the real progression of my part as I create all my setups.

This really seems like an essential feature for anything but the most basic CNC part. Existing solutions seem like ugly hacks. Autodesk, is this being worked on?

I don't see why this would be so hard to do. You already have the ability to do rest machining from a previous operation, so why can't this just be extended to rest machining from a previous setup (aka, rest machining from the final operation of that setup?)

I agree! Its soon 2019 😕

Yes please! Use stock from previous operation in new setup

HI Mvanoverbeck,

This can be done if you save stock then insert stock as a mesh file

No movement on this ?

I have wrapped my head around this topic for quite some time now. Well, I believe the solution is actually quite difficult if you don't try to cut corners:

- if you observe the CAM simulation and the resulting STL export, you will recognize that the output is quite scattered.

- This scattered object is far from a nicely shaped ...

You know what I mean. We just need more votes on this topic.

In my opinion this should be very crucial updated in Fusion360. In milling many parts have been made in more than one setup. Therefore, use of stock from previous setup is really helpful. So far, this is only drawback to mention when offering others to try Fusion360 CAM.

Fusion team, even if you keep the functionality as it is (where we remove the previous operation stock from the resulting simulation then import it back into the model as a new stock body), if you could make that saved body an .iges solid instead of .stl file with millions of polygons, that would be a huge improvement.

Thanks!

I've tried all the work arounds listed above and by Lars and NYCCNC but its very clunky.  I just went back to stringing together the setups now and having to simulate from the beginning each time which bogs down the computer.  Please get this into work soon.

Two years later, nothing changed? No way of continuing machining from the previous step? Only reimporting the stock as STL?

Some how the work around is borked and you are totally SOL now, great job Fusion team you really dropped the ball on this. I am quite livid and quite done with fusion.

Hi Max,

I understand your frustration on this, however using the previous stock for second ops works well.

Did you insert mesh as this puts the stock in the correct place at the correct scale. you can then use it as stock (set stock from solid)

Sometimes I can get through 2 or 3 setups using the same model, however when you get into 4, 5, 6 or more setups, it is nearly impossible, especially if you have multiple fixtures.

Fusion 360 will always be looked at like a lesser CAM system when it doesnt have this and other expected functionalities

Regarding the issue with importing the .stl mesh it being 10x larger than it should be: While my fusion is set up with Imperial units in inch when I selected millimeters for the mesh scale it reduced it to the correct size in relation to my other bodies and components.  It may not be super dimensionally accurate but its close enough for a stock model.

I really hope they implement this soon as it is a huge set back.

The fact that Fusion 360 all ready have a one way syncronization with the DERIVED COMPONENT, it really should be an option to save stock as derived component and linking that into the next OP.

I would say the most natural would be to have this entered in the CAM tree similar to a machining operation so you could have

2D adaptive

3D pocket

3D Morphed.....

Save as derived stock...

This shows how clumsy the current process is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M6c9I9n3-xY

Agreed. This needs to be implemented ASAP. The workaround is clumsy and tedious, especially when you have many setups and fixtures as I do. Also when the .stl geometry gets more complex from machining it can no longer be converted to a BRep. Then you are just SOL.

Don't convert it. Just pick the stl as the solid selection. Otherwise it's
useless
