Stop automatically changing the operation from 'new body' to 'cut' or 'join'

Stop automatically changing the operation from 'new body' to 'cut' or 'join'

An addition is needed in the preferences panel: the ability to turn off the automatic changes to the 'operation' in the dialogue box.

It is assumed by the program, for example, when you extrude a profile and the object happens to intersect another that a cut is required so it automatically changes the operation from 'new body' to 'cut'. However more often than not, a 'cut' is not what is required but rather a 'new body'. It should be my choice and not the programs choice. When the model is heavy this becomes more of an issue because the program switches to 'cut' then is calculating the 'cut' as you are sizing your extrusion for example and it severely slows down the operation. Whereas left as 'new body' the calculation is much much faster

I realize that this kind of automation is supposed to help but it really doesn't in this case. Many times you think a new body is going to be created because it says 'new body' by default, but later find out you performed a cut or join, then have to go back and correct it.

Please add the option in the preference panel to turn off automatic changes to the 'operation' in dialogue boxes.

If it's an option, I'm for it, but I happen to like the way it works.

The model I am currently working on has over a thousand parts by now. Having to constantly change the choice in the dialogue box back to new body hundreds of times makes it pretty obvious that there needs to be a user preference to turn this functionality off. A simple addition to the preferences panel would make a world of difference, especially when the model has many parts.

I made a screencast: (Fusion 360: pipe and dialogue box needs improving) that demonstrates a repetitive operation using the pipe tool where I have to constantly switch back to 'new body' each time after it automatically switches to 'cut'.

@donsmac,

Thank you for your idea.  This is getting archived due to the prioritization of this option in comparison to other items in our backlog.   The automatic operation as designed has addressed the workflow that we intended to address around joining bodies during creation.  The option to turn this off is a good idea, but it would be a few years out when compared to other items in out backlog that address workflows that currently can not be done.

Hmm. Archived?

I really feel for the guy with the ship.  My current project involves a bunch of lumber and I'm having the same problem (though not to the same extent I'm sure).  I can't imagine that this is that hard to implement.  This is one of the first frustrations I had using the program.  Generally I want to create a new body rather than join (or cut).  In fact, I'm having a hard time thinking of when I would have a bunch of joins to do repeatedly and the auto selection would actually help me out. Don't we usually construct things out of smaller pieces? I understand the purpose of this feature but it's really painful when you have a lot of extrusions to do and it chooses the wrong option every single time.

Seriously!!?? This is my biggest gripe when using Fusion 360. I also want to be able to set "New Body" as the default. PLEASE!!!!!

Hey Autodesk can you please make this an option. It's been over a year since this has been archived and it is such a cumbersome thing to have to change from Cut to New Body each time I extrude.

I also have designs that have hundreds of components and the lag from Fusion to process the DEFAULT Cut each time is seriously frustrating.

Imagine each time you wanted to push the brake pedal your foot first had to touch the gas pedal...

Love the program but still find this to be the most cumbersome thing.

agreed. As a new fusion user, this is something I intuitively expected. I searched 100% assuming there was a way to change the default operation. Mine shows "new body" as the operation until I extrude, then it automatically switches to "join". I have to finish the extrusion, and then switch back to "new body".

I have used Fusion360 now for a ton work and this feature still sucks big
time. Why it was implemented in the first place is beyond me, it's just as
ridiculous and annoying as ever. Especially if the body that is being cut
is a complex one and you have to wait and wait and wait for the cut to
happen before you choose 'new body, where as if a new body is being created
in the first place you wait no time!
Now when I do an operation or rather just before I do it, I will first
choose something other than 'new body' from the drop down list, then
secondly choose 'new body' from the list. The operation will now create a
'new body'! yahoo! Ridiculous. Not only 'cut' but automatically 'joining'
is just as stupid.. Absolutely no reason for it whatsoever, and why it
hasn't been changed yet is also bewildering. PLEASE FIX THIS FUSION
TEAM!!!!! god. 'New Body' is even in the drop down list but choosing it
doesn't actually choose it because it will still change to Cut or Join
during the operation. At least the user should be able to do that.. choose
'new body' and get a new body. makes sense to me. This feature is a big
waste of time.

I think we need to create a new request for this in the other forum (ideas etc) and then get everyone we can find to vote for it.  That's how things work with Fusion.

Also, it might be useful for some of us to explain or describe (perhaps with a video) why our workflows are so impeded by this.  I suspect that a large number of fusionista's are using Fusion in a very different manner or else this issue would have never existed in the first place.
