Sketch automatic constraint creation - Disable specific constraints individually

Sketch automatic constraint creation - Disable specific constraints individually

Several ideas have been posted to suggest an option to completely disable automatic constraint creation in the sketches. While there are times when turning this off is handy, I don't like all-or-nothing solutions, so here is a more flexible solution:

  • Add an option to completely disable automatic constraint creation: Personally I would like this option to be both in the Preferences and also mirrored somewhere in the "immediate user interface" where it can be toggled quickly with one or two clicks with minimal menu diving.
  • Hold Ctrl key to override default setting: When auto constraint creation is disabled using the setting described above, holding the Ctrl key temporarily toggles this setting. Thus, if auto constraint creation is disabled, holding Ctrl enables it, and if it is disabled, holding Ctrl enables it.
  • Add checkboxes to enable/disable individual constraints: In the sketch constraint toolbox, next to each constraint, add a checkbox to selectively prevent Fusion from creating specific constraints. Thus, only constraints that are 'checked' will be automatically created. So, for example, I usually prefer the 'horizontal/vertical' constraint over the 'perpendicular', but Fusion seems to like the perpendicular constraint. If this was implemented, I would uncheck just perpendicular constraint whilst keeping all other constraints checked (enabled). (Note:  Constraints disabled this way cannot be temporarily enabled by holding down Ctrl, in other words, the Ctrl key only affects constraints that are enabled. Therefore, constraints that have been individual disabled can only be created manually.)
  • Allow constraints to be assigned to keyboard shortcuts (maybe already in the works)

In the following mock-up the coincident and perpendicular constraints have been permanently disabled and will not be excluded from auto-creation:

Selecting individual auto constraint preferences would be useful for me. I tend to prefer Horizontal/Vertical constraints over parallel and perpendicular constraints, for example, even though the end result may be the same. And automatic coincident constraints often drive me batty, especially when they're laid over some other object and then cannot be selected, or when they create some other sketch object automatically, that I never intended. 🙂

Personally the only auto constraints I would leave enabled are coincident, concentric and horizontal/vertical which, looking at my drawings, are the most frequently used ones by a very large margin.

Great ideas.. Any of the options will do as long as it will give us control over constraints. I use mirror tool in skethces often, and it is a nightmare to see a loudout of unwanted constraint points that need manually deleting if further tweaking is required where a mirrored sketch is not important any more.

Actually, I still dont get it as to why this simple common sense option is not yet added! Autodesk?

Oops just noticed two critical typos in my original post:

Thus, if auto constraint creation is disabled, holding Ctrl enables it, and if it is disabled enabled, holding Ctrl enables disables it.

In the following mock-up the coincident and perpendicular constraints have been permanently disabled and will not be excluded from included in auto-creation

Apologies and huge thanks again to the forum admin for letting us edit our own posts...

How can i add checkboxes to enable/disable individual constraints? Thanks

@Anonymous You can't, that picture is a mock-up. But you can up-vote this feature request and maybe one day Autodesk will implement it.
