Hey all - we're are continuing to make improvements to the UI Preview and we want your feedback on how the S key shortcuts currently behaves. If you're using Fusion 360 with the UI Preview turned on, this post is for you. Look through option A and option B, and let us know which one you prefer.
A - Current State
S key Shortcuts are contextual mode specific and workspace specific. This means that, you can have a different set of S key Shortcuts for every contextual mode you're in as well as every workspace under the Workspace switcher.
For example, changing tabs under the Design workspace will not affect your S key shortcuts - they will remain consistent. If you enter Sketch mode, you can save Sketch-specific shortcuts. If you go to another workspace, you can have another set of shortcuts.
B - Tab specific shortcuts
S key Shortcuts are contextual mode, workspace, and tab specific. This means that, you can have a different set of S key Shortcuts for every tab you're on.
For example, the Solid Tab, Surface Tab, Sheet Metal Tab, and Tools Tab under Design workspace will each over their own specific Shortcuts dialog, instead of sharing one Design Shortcuts dialog.
Which one do you prefer? A or B? Talk to us in this thread - let us know!
First, is the ideastation the best place for this? Surly it would be more visible in the design section and if I vote what am I voting for? Vote if I want a change, don't vote if I'm happy with the way it is now?
Don't really like either option. How about tabs on the S key toolbox? Or some way to separate each workspace to a line in the toolbar, for example Solid top line, Patch second, Sheet Metal third.
At the moment my modeling toolbox is like this so I can work with solid and patch without going to the top of the screen and toggling the tabs. Would work better if each workspace was on one line.
Same goes for sketch, have each tab on a different line.
If I have to choose between your A and B then I'd go for A but why not have a user preference as I know some people want pretty much every tool from each tab on the search toolbox.
I tend to prefer dedicated shortcut keys over the options in the s key toolbar to limit on clicking. I think I would like option B more if there was a way to switch between the tabs using a shortcut key. Otherwise, I would agree with everything that @HughesTooling mentioned.
I like the contextual shortcuts, as long as there is a hotkey for switching between the tabs quickly. Is there a reason TAB doesn't swap between the tabs?
Thanks everyone for chiming in! @leowarren34 @Anonymous I hear ya. We haven't instrumented that yet. Apart from what you mentioned, would you rather have 1 S key container shared across Solid, Surface, and Sheet Metal or would you rather have a unique S key container for each of those tabs?
Hi @keqingsong, my answer changes based off my previous comment about a hotkey for tabs. If there is no hotkey to switch between tabs, I would prefer to have 1 S key container shared across the tab spaces. If there is a hotkey I would prefer a unique S key container. The advantage of the unique S container is lost if you are already up at the tab clicking to switch, you can just pick your feature there instead of having to open the S container.
B is fine for the moment as it's better than what we have now (in the new UI) and if that's all we are going to get this time around.
However, What I would really like is a B+, not just B.
The context sensitivity is mostly helpful, but I want to be able to override it for specific commands.
For example "Change Parameters" I want in each tab that is relevant to geometry creation tab including sketching.
I don't really need a tab specific S-Key menu for the "tools", however some of the commands in the tools section I use in sketch, solid and surface such as the curvature comb.
The curvature map and zebra strips analysis tools on the other hand make only sense in solid and surface.
I posted on the EE forum something that Mark has expanded on in a post above. Something as simple as separators that allow us to segment the different commands into separate segment that are all visible at the same time would also be very helpful.
Tabs right in the S-Key menu could also be used very effectively to collect those commands that are not context sensitive but need to be available in many tabs, such as "change parameters" or the "Curvature comb" then we only have two tabs in the S-key menu an might even be able to swap between them with a hot key.
Considering we are talking about a new UI and all the reasons behind such implementation I have to bring a topic which seems to be completely ignored. Most of it was already brought up in the separate sections but still buried for years.
Why there is no quick shortcut for switching input fields via tab or custom key. This is major behavioral part of any UI but still not implemented to this day. Not to mention changing the view. Why Fusion360 is heavily relying so much on mouse when it's not actually needed? If I measure distances I have to cover on 34" screen for basic operations it's like running a marathon.
There is also no shortcut to completely turn off-control object visibility so can easily preview the looks of actual model worked on.. and so on.
Also when disappearing history marker bug is getting squashed? This is a major bug for everyone working on the bigger screen.
I'm also hoping will get a dark mode/theme as well so F360 would become easier on my eyes.
I wanted to bring some light on what should priority as I really like the new UI and considering it a great initiative.
But since on the topic of keybinds I think if they do get introduced a fully functioning menu is a must as else it defeats the point of having keybinds to save time.
