Reference Sketch from another design

Reference Sketch from another design

I usually split my model into a seperate designs per component. This way I can modify only what I want without having to hide/show bodies or components in a monolithic design pattern.

I would like to be able to reference a sketch from a base design.

Example:

1- Design 1 has a sketch with a line that measures 100mm.

2- Design 2 has a sketch which total length is a reference to the line in Design 1.

3- If I make a change to the line in Design 1 to 50mm, the sketch in Design 2 total length should change to 50mm due to the reference.

This way I can decouple all my components from the base Design and just have a new design for assembly purposes only.

Thanks in advance.

Forgot to add that this feature would make it easier for designers to collaborate since one can be referencing the sketch of another's design to create the new part.  This would also reduce the need to communicate back and forth any corrections based on measurements.

if you project from sketch 1 to sketch 2 it works like you wont

True, but I want to be able to share just a part of my design.  Wht you say works inside the same design.

Programmatically, everything is an Object woth properties.  I should be able to share that object so that others can reference it and build the part based on that Object.

Example:

Let's say I have a design with a sketch and it contains a square.  I would like someone else in the commutity or company to build a part based on a measurement of that sketch, like just on side of the square wich would be a line Object.  This way I don't have to expose my entire design and any changes on my sketch would reflect on anyone referencing my shared line Object.  Also, it would be easier to organize all my parts by creating different files referencing a main sketch ( control sketch ) .

I think this would protect my idea/design and anyone can contribute, if they want.

it's a good idea you can extract your parameters out of a sketch as a .csv at this time and those can be used but only as the parameters, or the other way is to just take the sketch back so it only has the part of the sketch what you wont to shear in it.

That works but I would have to ditribute the .csv or sketch evry time there is a change.  I just thought that since Fusion is implementing the idea of sharing and contributing, and since the feature of updating/refreshing remote componets is already added, it would be a good thing to add.

Thanks for the prompt replies...

much needed feature.

simply linking files is not enough. using dimensions from a sketch in a linked file that may change in the future will render the subsequent designs "incompatible".

being able to reference dimensions and sketches from an imported file as if it were an assembly would be a welcome feature.
