Currently, when you create, say, an extrude, the interface decides what you likely want to do. If you extrude into a body, for instance, it selects the Cut option. This is true even if you have previously selected Join, New Component, or New Body.
If you are moving fast this is easy to miss, and at best requires more clicking when the interface makes a choice other than what you have made. And I find the interface selection is more often wrong than right for me. It's frustrating in the same way that auto-correct spelling is.
I don't believe the interface should ever override your manual selections. I would prefer to see New Body be the default behavior- from there you can Boolean other operations if you really wanted to join, cut, or intersect and forgot to change the option. And if you manually select one of the other options, the interface should honor that selection.
