I thought about this as well and the trouble is an axis has no length. It has no real start or end and is in effect infinite in length. So unless they come up with plane along path at or from an existing point it doesn't really work.
@HughesTooling From what I've seen, the line representing an axis has a start and an end point, and those points can be dragged further apart or closer together to help you visualize where that axis goes. So while in mathematics an axis may not have a length, Fusion 360 acts like they can have a length.
But even if the axis in Fusion 360 was infinite, there are ways around the problem, such as positioning it at one of the points (or edge) used to define the new axis in the first place. Worst case scenario they could pick the point along the axis that would be closest to the Origin.
