I think the Patch environment should be called 'Surface' (since that is essentially what it is) and it would make for less confusion. Let's call it what it is.
I would even go a step further and just remove the patch environment altogether. It's quite common to combine solid and surface modeling, even on single objects. Why does there need to be a separate "environment" for surface commands vs. solid commands? In fact why not just go to a tabbed toolbar like every other modern software?
