The Patch command is an approximation tool: the CV points do not lie exactly on the edges, therefore, is quite hard getting a decent surface.
If you have a reasonable number of smooth connections among the surfaces then you can stitch the model easily.
Otherwise, (see the example below) if you have a series of sharp edges the tool tends to generate a sort of auto-intersection producing a gap.
A possible solution to partially solve this issue (adopted in Rhino and Solidworks) is to increase the number of the internal spans but, unfortunately, what we will achieve is a dense surface, not quite easy to manage.
Regarding the Patch command, in my humble opinion, I would suggest to the development team adding the capability to use a series of further constraints, for instance, an internal curve.
yep that is very true - Autodesk has that technology and Fusion 360 with that would propel the app in terms of worth for modelers to a new level. Imagine why there was a modeling plug in for Rhino !?
i do not know how easy it would be to integrate those - so I cannot speak for it.
but alias is alias - not the most user friendly modeling tool and alias is a pur surfacemodeler with poor solid tools.
fusion has the solid modeling tools and with better surface modeling tools would be a new design platform for both so Mac and Win.
Time ago I have downloaded the Inventor trial, just to investigate further. The Patch tool included within Inventor offers more options than F360. For instance, further constraints can be selected, the boundary and the internal curves as well.
The development team could enhance the F360 Patch command easily, reasonably quickly I would say.
I suspect that the F360 team do not want creating a sort of competition among their products but one thing is certain: some tools need to be enhanced, particularly these surfacing tools.
- The Patch command, just a bit - Loft: G1/G2 on 4 sides (It's not mandatory but useful)
