Overall Dimensions of Body/Component in Model Workspace

Many times I will receive a customer file and want to quickly get an idea of overall dimensions of said body or component LxWxH. 

This is to get a rough idea of what size stock will be required for machining on my CNC machines.

 

The measure command does nothing more than tell me a Body is selected????  (See attached screen grab).

 

My workaround for now is to currently go to the CAM environment create a setup select the body and use the stock tab to get this information.

 

Unless I am missing something, can this information be reflected in the measure dialogue box please?

Find the body in the browser, right click and select properties it will give you a bounding box size.

Beware of using that 'Bounding Box' for determining stock needs!!

 

The bounding box has no direct relationship to a part you see onscreen. 

 

1) A bounding box can and sometimes does contain many data descriptions other than the actual "seen on screen" part.

So a rectangular piece of bar stock that is aligned to the origin planes, dimensioned at at 2x25x150mm can have a bounding box of 50x56x400. No joke. All depends on what else is inside the bounding box with the actual part, and finding out what else might be in the bounding box isn't a straightforward thing.

 

2) That same bar, rotated to 45 degrees on the XZ plane has a bounding box of 107.4x25x107.4  with nothing but the part inside the box - which is certainly NOT something you want to use if you're choosing what stock to cut that bar from. Any rotation off origin planes introduces this issue.
