Never steal focus

Never steal focus

This is fairly minor but still annoying and easy to fix.

I just updated F360 and during the update process, put Fusion in the background and looked at a few web pages.

Fusion brought itself to the foreground no fiewer than five times during the update process (and twice more just now as I was writing this sentence). More annoyingly those were all for things that required no user interaction.

It's just of a matter of politeness not to steal focus unless you're sure it's what the user would want (and, in my case, that'd be never).

On Fusion 360 1.8.604, OS X 10.8.4

This is a small but annoying 'feature' of the current Fusion 360 app.

An application should not "promote" itself to be the topmost application in a windowing system for hardly any reason. It should be up to the user to select the depth order of the windows, at any time.

Fusion 360 seems to be doing this. The attached video shows one workflow where this happens, but I think there are others as well (maybe it has to do with the way process bar and/or the browser are implemented?).

1. Switch to Fusion 360. Do something time taking, i.e. a save.

2. Switch (Cmd-tab) to another application, i.e. Safari

3. Wait

Expected:

Nothing should happen. Fusion 360 should finish its save and remain behind the topmost window

Actual:

Once done with its task, Fusion 360 promotes itself back to being the topmost app.

This is confusing to the user, and makes Fusion 360 feel as a strange, non-native application.

Isn't this annoying anyone else?

It's still there in the latest (1.8.674) release. I opened a design, switched to Safari while it was loading. Twice Fusion 360 put itself topmost before the load was finished (and I switched back to the browser).

If you want this fixed, please push the Capture 2013-10-17 kello 10.44.55.jpg kudos button. Thanks.

I'm finding myself restarting F360 many times a day. Each is not instantanious so I often work on something else while it's loading. Unfortuatatly F360 brings itself back to the foreground at least once (sometimes more than once) midway through the startup. Even if the startup was complete, it should wait until the user focuses on it, but it's particularly annoying when it's not yet ready to handle user interaction.

Some programs are worse about this than others.  But in general, if I put a program into the backround, it should stay there until I bring it forward again.

I also find the focus-thievery annoying and distracting.  -jamie

I agree and I want to fix it.

Can you comment more about when you see this? Only during updates or during regular use as well?

Thanks,

Bankim

During startup Is a big one but I t happens at lots of random times. The only one I'm sure of off hand is during and after processing though.

Yeah, agree.  CAD app should never force itself to the front.  Notifications are fine (and 360 seems to do this, at least on the mac), but stealing focus is a no-no.    See this related thread in forum.

Thanks,

It takes a while to load Fusion 360 and so I multitask - the constant focus switching on startup is such a pain! Kudos for posting this feedback item.

This project is a larger task and may take sometime for a solution, however development is currently working on it so I am changing it to Accepted.

Fusion steals focus quite a bit when starting up and has also done so at other times (such as when opening files).

Agreed; a program should never steal focus (in my opinion).

A modern application should not during launch or long calculations regain mouse focus without the user wanting so.

So limits doing anything else while Fusion is busy on your computer.

This is also a matter of good UI programming and UX decision.

Currently it is very annoying and a very old issue.

This cannot be that hard gents!

This just falls under the general heading of «when you're a guest in somebody's system, exercise good manners»

I think it's great that Fusion is "energetic" but I really don't need it popping in front of everything I do when it's supposed to be running in the background. Do the function I requested and if you're in the background, do it in the background.

Sometimes I'm editing After Effect animation, or fine tuning something in Blender, while Fusion is calculating or patterning in the background, and then when it completes, then like an impetuous child, it jumps to the forefront of my screen obfuscating my action or worse sometimes canceling the edit or action I'm performing. I wish if Fusion app is in background, run in background.

Just my pet peeve, had to share that suggestion: when in back, stay in back.

Thanks,

Alldaron

This thread is maybe a little old, but I’d like to see it implemented! On OSX while fusion 360 is starting up it steals window focus 3 times while not actually changing the active application. It’s not uncommon for me to start Fusion 360, switch into another application to continue working and then switch back to 360 when it’s loaded, only this process is somewhat hampered when Fusion 360 keeps throwing splash screens and a half loaded window in front of whatever I’m doing - doubly so if that task is quitting the other application (with ⌘Q)  just as the fusion 360 window appears and promptly quits.

Not super critical, of course, but please stop the theft!
