mesh align tools

mesh align tools

when importing a mesh I get something like this.  the mesh is not orthogonal to the origin.  using the available tools I can get close by eye but not really close enough. I would like a tool that would....

1. best fit a group of faces (or many points) to a plane

2. best fit a group faces (or points) to cylinder axis (align mesh cylinder to y axis)

3. mesh point to origin translation

4. also maybe creating reference plane and axis from mesh data

as imported

after tweaking close but not close enough

really like the tool so far

Definitely needs to be baked in and haven't tried this but if the moments of inertia and center of mass work for meshes, you could at least make a script to center them (or do it manually if you need to)

Also for cases with high speed parts like this, it'd be interesting if there were a tool to minutely tweak the mesh so the mass distribution is symmetric and balanced (or satisfies some other constraint). Without that, small imperfections or misalignments could cause vibration or catastrophic failure

Status changed to: Future Consideration

We have this in the backlog as part of a series of mesh workspace improvements. A lot of our team is currently focused on getting sheet metal developed, so we will pick this up later next year.
