Make STL files machinable directly

Make STL files machinable directly

There is a HUGE library of files on the website thingiverse.com

All the files are downloaded as an .STL file.

PLEASE make it easier to import or just open natively these .stl files for editing and modifying.

I believe there is a  large potential market you are missing by not being able to open these .stl files.

thank you so much for listening

I believe this functionality already exists.

STL files can be imported by going to the data panel, opening a project, and clicking upload. After that you can use 3D machining directly, although 2D options will be limited or non-existent because there are no selectable faces or curves.

If you require 2D milling operations you can convert the stl file from mesh to BRep using the Modify > Mesh to BRep command, this will create a fusion360 editable object, but with poor geometry courtesy of the lossy mesh format to resolve that you can merge faces using in the patch workspace, under Modify > Merge.

Then you can go back to the model workspace and make any changes you require to the underlying geometry.

See this screencast from Paul Deyo, he gives a quick view of mesh to face feature.
