Local file "Open" action supported by offering to upload and open

Please improve the user workflow of "opening" downloaded Fusion360 archive & other file types.

Currently if I export an archive Fusion 360 file format .f3d and let others download and open it (double click file) they get an error message "Opening of local files is not supported!"

Can AutoDesk improve this by adding an option under the error message to upload and open the file? Or at a minimum look to add a hyperlink to the error message https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/fusion-360/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/Err...

This would help users looking for an offline way of sharing files to still use Fusion 360 in a manner that is consistent with the Windows Explorer interface. So many new users learning Fusion 360 stumble over this simple workflow when we go to work on tutorial projects and class homework, as well as when working with others where we share files over web pages, email, dropbox and other non-AutoDesk cloud methods. Adding the support of upload and open instead of just an error message will help IMMENSELY!

Thank you for your consideration!

Stephen

Have you tried New Design From File it allows opening of f3d, stp, igs and sat.

New design from file works but Fusion should still play nicer with Windows explorer.  Double clicking to open files from explorer is so ubiquitous it's silly for Fusion to not support it.

I really like this idea. Double click the file and it just automatically uploads it and opens it in Fusion. The only problem I see is, does it upload it to your last project? Should it prompt where to upload to?

It should prompt for a location.

As uploads are handled by either your internet browser or the data panel in Fusion what do you expect to happen when you double click a file in explorer. I guess Fusion would have to start and give you the option where you want to save, as uploads through the internet browser are not automatically converted to Fusion designs like uploads through the data panel are.

Mark,

Through the app is kinda how I imagine it. Just like any other app. Not sure if they could make some kind of handler once the web version of Fusion is done or even something that would upload to A360? Maybe that could be handled through the A360 app. Since I'm basically moving from Inventor (installs A360) to Fusion it would be nice to get some actual use out of A360.

@mfeathers As you're moving from inventor and have the a360 sync app this thread might interest you.

@HughesTooling Interesting, I followed the steps and while it's pretty cool, didn't bring over any of my CAM stuff. We actually had Fusion before Inventor so all my stuff was drawn in Fusion, exported then imported into Inventor.. We bought a single seat of Inventor just for CAM because Fusion did not support lathes at the time (it did about a month later). I could see where people more vested in Inventor making the leap would benefit from that though.
