Line Etch Feature

Line Etch Feature

I need to be able to engrave a line (multiple open profile - sketch) to our sheet metal profile

 Multiple Line Engrave.jpg

An additional feature could be added, where we could project a sketch (line, open profile) onto a folded sheetmetal part, and this then transferes to the flat pattern. The feature Emboss could be improved by adding a feature called [Engrave from line] right next to [Emboss from face] [Engrave from face].

The feature must NOT remove material and thereby alternate the physical properties. The mass has to stay the same before and after this feature is applied [Engrave from line]. The depth has to be grayed out when using this feature.

Hope this idea will be well received, and that we (at GEA Scan Vibro) is not the only ones having this issue (We had a similar feature in Solid Edge, which is our old CAD system).

Hi @Anonymous

You are talking about Fusion 360 right?

Looks like you are using Inventor and Fusion doesn't have sheetmetal yet.

Hi Colin Smith

This is a feature I would like to have in Inventor.

After I posted this issue, I have learned a work around that seams to be good. You can create a sketch (The engraving you want), which you can transfer to the flat pattern. When you save you flat pattern as a .DXF you can turn on the layer: IV_Unconsumed sketches. This will show all the sketched in the flat pattern, on the DXF file.

Hi @Anonymous

You posted this idea in the Fusion360 IdeaStation forum, hence my confusion about your request.

Ideas for Inventor should be posted here: http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/inventor-ideastation/idb-p/v1232/tab/most-recent

I tried moving it for you but it seems I don't have the power 😉

Cheers,

Colin

While I applied for the F360 sheet metal beta I have not heard. In the meantime, I'm attempting to engrave lines

using the sheet metal features in Geomagic (Allibre) design. Unlike the post here, I need/want to remove material

from the sheet which will be either a cylinder or a frustrum of a cone. In some cases it would be a cut thru all.

[ie making a hole, not necessarily round] and some times it will be making a groove/slot to a specified depth.

I need to be able to make the sketches from either onto the flattened surface OR the formed part.

When the part is finished I need to be able to flatten it and create drawings for CNC cutting.

I have discovered that Geomagic Design's Sheet Metal tool cannot make partial cuts in sheet metal

they must go all the way thru. NOT GOOD.

for an example of what I'm trying to design see
