Labels on Design History

Labels on Design History

When you are capturing design history and the project keeps going complex with many steps, if you have to edit some "key" feature, you can have a hard time trying to find it, you need to find one extrusion among 500, so when you now there is a feature that probably needs to be modified later, or you are trying different things, or maybe even delete it, would be terrific help to be able to label it (and choose a color, and write text to see when you hover on it)

I think there is already room in the UI to add this Smiley Happy

My advice is read up on Rule #1 and use components for an assembly like that. Anyone with a bit of experience would not build an assembly like that in the root component. When you use and activate components only features for the active component are shown in the timeline so it's far easier toy manage.

Here's a link explaining rule one.

PS. I have voted for your idea as it would still be useful but do yourself a favor and follow Rule #1 in the future.

Not only would I agree with @HughesTooling but you should seriously consider reading through the available documentation with particular emphasis on understanding the difference between a components and bodies. Maybe also watch a few tutorials and get some experience under your belt before posting other "ideas".

@TrippyLighting@HughesToolingthanks for your reply, i know the rule #1, and the difference between bodies and components,

i have 2000+ components here, is my "idea" that hurtful? cheers!

No, but the guitar model did not contain any components and the timeline hurt my eyes 😉

That made it look like another noob that puts an "Idea" in the idea station that does not know what he's doing.

You'd be surprised what nonsense is sometimes posted in the idea forum and even gets votes!

I do think that labels can be useful and it's been suggested before, e.g. a note feature in the timeline.

@TrippyLightingyes that guitar was a quick project, i use it to graphic my idea because i was just making renders and got it opened when i started to post this, im not saying its the greatest of the ideas, just popped into my head and shared it.

btw, i am a noob haha

A good place for history and Joints is in the browser tree like in Inventor, Solidworks, Alibre, Onshape etc  at component level. This way, you can navigate to your component of interest in the browser tree and at a glance see every joint, feature etc, then quickly modify. The timeline at the bottom is just too cumbersome and difficult to use with large assemblies. It will also add a familiar workflow for those coming from other parametric platforms.

This is really not an either or scenario. Notes can be useful in both jet timel0ine and browser.

if we can have one only the better place, however is clearly the timeline.

Flags on the design history would be SUPER useful.   Even better being able to add roll-over text to the flag that would pop-up when hovered over.   I was just coming to the Idea Station to suggest as much; a do diligence search found this suggestion.
