Sheet metal in Fusion has been virtually untouched since the initial appearance of sheet metal tools in Fusion 360. It's time these sheet metal tools were updated with some enhanced capability like: Convert a part to a sheet metal part Rip Tool Corner Seam tool Hem tool Bend Tool Lofted Flange tool (press brake initially, formed eventually) These tools have been implemented in Autodesk Inventor for a very long time and Autodesk knows how these tools should function. For Fusion to be a professional design tool, it must include core sheet metal functionality that has been missing for a very very long time now.

When using tools where multiple selections are required it would more efficient to change inputs with the tab key instead of clicking on the next input box. For instance the Mirror tool requires Objects to be mirrored and a Mirror Line. the Objects input is selected by default, but to switch to the Mirror Line input you must select it with the mouse. Using the tab key would speed up the process. -Jake

Very happy to see sheet metal in Fusion and the functionality so far is great BUT I have a few, perhaps strange, uses that might be worth looking into developing for sheet metal in the future. One is ROLL... there are many sheet metal projects/ structures that use a rolled form rather than folded. I'm talking about cylinders, cones and the like. There are many programs available to create and deconstruct conical shapes for sheet outside of Fusion but it would be nice to have everything under one roof? Thoughts? In the same vein, there are processes like hydroforming which inflate a material to the finished shape. It would be great to be able to reverse the process, say starting with a final shape and flattening it... perhaps 'flatten' is not the right term here. Compress? Squash? Anyway you get the idea. It's neither unfold nor unroll. I thought I would put this out here and see if anyone else could use features like this? I have work-arounds using various formats to reach my final result but the "all under one roof" idea is really appealing. Thoughts?

it is really frustrating when you need to create a bunch of geometries just to snap to a point on a geometry. Autocad offers really good snapping features. This Improves productivity dramatically. Also, polar snapping is a very convenient tool. I request Team Fusion to please consider adding following features if possible: 1. Snapping to different geometries like midpoint, quadrant of circles, the intersection of lines, etc. 2. "Ortho" feature which restricts cursor in horizontal and vertical directions only. 3. Polar snap which has a set of angles which the cursor snaps to. I've attached pictures to explain the exact feature just in case the reader doesn't understand. Regards!

I used to use Inventor and that software had a feature that allowed you to convert an extruded shape to sheet metal. This was so helpful. So often you extrude a shape and then wish you working in sheet metal mode. I would love for Fusion 360 to bring this over from Inventor.

Hi, In sheet metal when designing a flange is would be great if we could select a flat face of the flange, sketch a line across, then select the flange and the line to create a fold in the flange. then we would just have to adjust the angle to what we need for the bend. This would give us more freedom of using angles when creating a folded flange. Example: Here is screen shot of a flange with a line sketch in the middle of it showing where the flange would be folded. Thanks Eric

Hi fusion sheet metal team: It would be awesome if the sheet metal tool/rules had a mechanism to automatically insert a bend alignment feature in the flat pattern for manual braking. Right now I unfold after the sheet metal part is designed and add a tangent half circle to the outer edge of each bend. This way when the pattern is cut there's a feature that can be aligned with the die to get the bend in the right location without a lot of tedious measurement: More automation means less human error. I think that nesting would be a great addition to Fusion. I'm getting used to Fusion right now and I'd like to keep using Fusion, but I can't really do anything with it since it doesn't have a nesting option. I need this option for our laser that will show up in july.

In addition to all the functions Sheet Metal workspace provides now, it would be useful to have option to render SM model with some bends unfolded. That option should be useful to visualise bend process and order in particular. Currently F360 requires to fully refold model in order to switch to Render workspace.

Currently, when creating a flat pattern from a sheet metal part, "Create Flat Pattern" option by default finds the ‘longest edge’ on the flattened body and aligns that longest edge to the positive X-axis, which may lead to unexpected results for certain geometries: Flat Pattern Changing Orientation It would make sense to introduce a Reorient flat pattern feature that would allow to adjust the orientation (see the feature within Inventor).

Idea: add separate feature or special Flange behavior for 180 degrees flange bend Purpose: to make injury-safe edges Currently it takes two separate operations: 90 degrees bend with some unknown height, plus one more 90 degrees bend with needed height First flange height is unpredicable - I have to put it unreasonably large and then edit feature to find minimum value when second bend still valid. Ex. in my case it's 2.1 mm for 1 mm metal. Or one have to make it 179 degrees with Adjacent bend position and unpredictably large height. In this example it's 140 mm height but only ~25 mm flange generated.

Is it possible to add a feature that automatically does the dimensioning in the drawing mode? this feature is already in inventor and Autocad. I am not sure if what I said explains what I have in my mind. so if there are any question please ask. This feature will make work so much faster. I hope it is added to fusion fast.

Title says it all! As of now, double clicking with the middle mouse button anywhere does a zoom to fit. It could be useful to have the same effect if you do it in the empty space but if you click on a face, you "Look at" the face. The vue is rotated to get the face normal (parallel) to the screen. I think this could be a useful and probably quite easy to implement for the development team. - Blaise

It would be great to export DXF from drawing, as drawing gets updated once a change is done, so you don't need to go and re export every file separately. We normally do this in Creo, have a page with all the cut files in one, and export that, as a cut file. The only problem would be the max size of a drawing A0, custom size would be first prize. cut file

I'd love to see an automated slot and tab creation feature for sheet metal designs. This is an accepted feature for Inventor, but I haven't seen anything similar for Fusion 360.

Fusion 360, like most CAM that has a Sheet Metal module, does a good job of adding certain types of relief cuts. But for some of the parts that we design, we take a different approach where we add slot-shaped relief cuts along lines that will be bent into place by hand, with pliers. I've attached a couple examples. As it stands, we have to generate a laser-cut file, then unfold the part and manually add slot-shaped relief cuts to make this happen. I'd love to be able to give Fusion some inputs for slot width, minimum material length between slots, number of slots etc. (like tabs in the CAM workspace), and have these automatically generate along selected fold lines.

I love the NASTRAN solver and the Sheet Metal Capabilities of Fusion 360 but when is Autodesk going to introduce shell elements. When performing analysis on large sheet metal assemblies we have to use solid elements instead of shell elements which makes computation nearly impossible (elements < 1/3 material thickness). Often times I have to export the models to solidworks and perform the analysis there. Seems like a simple fix to make the program robust. Keep up the good work!!

It would be nice to have a specific text that is for plasma, laser and water jet cutting that is a single line and does not cut out the centers of letters and numbers. For example o,p,b,d,R,q, 6,8,9. This would require there to be dashes in the text to connect the centers to the rest of the part. Unless this is already a thing and I have not seen it yet I think it would be a massive help to those who do a lot of laser and plasma cut parts that all need labeling.

Hello, during my daily work, I get a lot of files (Step or Inventor files) of my customers who were drawn as a sheet metal part. Unfortunately, these parts can not be unfolded because the parts can not be imported into Fusion sheet metal. As long as the imported body has the same thickness at all positions, it should still be possible to easily unfold the parts. (Just as it works in Inventor). best regards Erwin

I am pretty sure that this feature is not on fusion 360. My idea is to allow users to work on more than one item at a time if the user as more that one display. For example - if a user has 3 displays, and they are making an f1 car. They could be working on the front wings on one display, rear wings on another and the main body on the third display.

I realize that there are a few requests for Dual Units, but has anyone requested dual units throughout the GUI? This would be more efficient as I wouldn't need to do extra work calculating the conversion of units. Can we please be able to either go to document settings and make these changes. Alternatively, be able to right-click on a dimension and then be able to individually, group, or globally, Display Dual units? This could be defined using a simple check-box approach in the settings/preferences or a menu, etc. There are many ways to approach this feature. Thanks!

I found a shortcoming in sheet metal. Most Cad packages have the ability to drop a standard shape into a sketch or make a hole directly. By standard shapes, I mean things like electrical receptacles and DB25 connectors. Even D shaped holes . This functionality would be great as a hole command. Just like the existing hole command, but with library shapes.

In the sheetmetal tab we need forming and punching tools for the easy function of punching holes for standard electronic components or custom components, plus we need the standard vent punches for air ventilation in the sheetmetal enclosure designs. 😁 The other item that will need to be located in the sheetmetal tab is the forming tool from sketch. Instructions Place a sketch (Square or rectangle with fillets on the corners). Push the wall of the sheet metal with the sketch and add taper and depth of the push, but make sure the designer is not able to over push the raised surface flange in the sheet metal design to an item that is not possible to manufacture. (Remember they need taper and the forming radii that will not rip the material for the calculations) (See below)😋

I know in an ideal world everyone would have their application up to date and utilise (utilize) the latest versions of all software everywhere. But we live in the real world and thats not the case. Please bring the existing functionality over from AutoCAD360 to enable version control of DXF exports. Having to export, a dxf, open in an alternate cad viewer, save as, overwrite, then proceed on elderly machining centre (center) isn't ideal. Having the option such as below would really make my day.

ive been working with sheet plastics for almost 10 years now. when modeling with plastics in the sheet metal space in fusion (or Solidworkds, inventor etc) i always come across the same issue. You cannot have a bend radius of zero. when bending most widely used sheet plastics you do not need to compensate for the bend radius. im not entirely sure why but this has always been the case for anything up-to around 10mm thick. anything upwards of 10mm may need some compensation, but very rarely. when we bend plastics there is indeed a bend radius and they're not sharp inside. but the flat panel size needs no compensation at all. it would be nice to be able to have an option for no compensation when creating flat patterns within fusion for now the only way around it is to give a bend radius value of something like 0.001 which works OK but doesn't look realistic in renders

I'm really liking the sheet metal tools in Fusion 360, but there's a feature that would be easy to include and really useful to those of us who laser cut a lot of sheet metal parts: in the CAM workspace, it would be really useful to be able to quickly add engrave lines along bend lines in order to make it really easy to line the bends up on the break!

I'm working in sheetmetal, and having F360 say "Unfold failed" without any more information is particularly frustrating. Rather than leaving us to guess what needs to be adjusted, just unfold it anyway and mark the conflicts in red. Let us see the problem and take measurements to see how much something has to be moved, rather than a series of guesses to try to guess the clearance needed. Oh, and having the "More info" link on the error dialog come up as "Unfolding failed" isn't exactly what I'd call more info.

Hi, it would be great if there was a preference or option at export time to set the DXF units. Currently I design primarily in metric, but my waterjet guy uses inches, and DXF doesn't store the units for some archaic and boneheaded reason. To send the waterjet a path to cut I need to first change the workspace units to inches, do the export, and then convert back to mm to continue working. This gets tiresome extremely quickly, and is also error-prone as I don't always remember to do this currently necessary step. If the Fusion 360 team could (a) set a default export unit, (b) allow me to choose at time of export, or (c) motivate the world to fix DXF (ha!), this would make this workflow significantly more joyful. The Default angle that is called out in the bend table in the drawing is the outside angle. For the Trumpf press brake I need to be able to label the inside angle. For me this is critical in MFG drawings for the shop floor. I can enter it manually but I rather the software drive the call out instead of me to avoid human error. Is there a way to do this or does this need to be an enhancement request? On the attached .pdf it shows the bend table calling out 75 degrees for bend 4 which I need to have 105 degrees and 95 degrees for bend 3 which I need to call out 85 degrees. If my operator were to enter 75 and 95 respectively I would not get the profile shown.

Hi, I think it would be cool if you could select to keep an operation window (i.e. extrude) open instead of it closing and having to reopen it. I realise there is a shortcut 'Repeat ****' option, but I think it's more useful to keep the window open in certain situations.

When you create a sheet metal body, where you close an item so they just touch, the ends fuse instead of staying separate. That does not really make sense when modelling with sheet metal. For solids it would. I know the workaround is to just a bit of tolerance, but it should not be necessary. Has been logged with development team as: FUS-40600 but would be interesting to hear other good ideas for same improvement. Also it would be nice if a flange could "shape" automatically after the other parts of a sheet metal it meet just like two flanges made at the same time next to each other does best Hoegge

I work with a group of people all using different CAD systems. Many projects involve some bent sheet metal parts. Having the ability to convert a STEP model that was previously a sheet metal part into a sheet metal part in Fusion would be very handy for creating dxf files for cut tables and templates. Currently I have to transfer them to other programs that can accomplish this.

For constructing models based on paper or sheet metal, it's really important to constrain models based on the length of curves/lines instead of only the distance between two points on the curve. Not having this feature makes it virtually impossible to correctly model a curved piece of paper / sheet metal based on the size of the original sheet. This is also really important when interacting with belts around pulleys.

In sheet-metal drawing it is often required to the tangent between or from and edge to a tangent. Below is an example where the dimensions are associated to the end points of the arc of the bend and not the tangent which is not accurate. I do have to say the sheet-metal functionality has come a long way and has some features that work extremely well and I intend to use it on the next project. Regards, David Bigham

I am very frustrated with the inability to make a layout of various flat parts on a sheet, program and cut in the cam interface. The best we can do is unfold parts temporarily and save them as a copy. I don't think the K factor is figured properly for this. Also you cannot do any programming on an unfolded part without first exiting the unfold configuration of the part. The same goes for the flat pattern. The software assumes that the only thing one would want to do is send to a laser or something ( I honestly don't know what we are expected to do with our flat patterns, if we cannot save them or utilize them in the cam interface. We do a lot of plastic fabrication and we are constantly using sheet metal design function to create heat bent plastic parts. We then flatten and cut on our cnc routers. There is no good way to get a flat pattern instance of the part that can be layed-out on a sheet and programmed in the cam interface. Why not?

At the moment they do show up and are interpreted by our lasers as cut out paths. I reckon this option could be a simple tick box in the preferences such as "sheet metal flat pattern DXF export - hide bend lines" where the default in unchecked kind regards, Remi

When creating a sheet metal part it would be helpful if the parameter for thickness was named thickness and not a dimension name like d9 or d22. If you change the sheet metal rule, the dimension updates and anything you link to it will have to be relinked. This is worked around by creating your own "Thickness" and linking it to whatever the current rule is, but frustrating when changes are made to a rule, even if it uses the same thickness value as a previous rule.

It's really important to add the ability to select flange edge between different sheet metal component and automatically miter these flange, like Inventor can do. In these screenshot you can see that I can't select the left vertical edge to add flange on the other component.

When creating a sheet metal flange it would be handy to be able to create a flange where the face created can be some custom shape. The problem arises when the face/edge where the flange starts is not perpendicular to other faces. The new flanges, as seen in image 1 and 2, joins with the surrounding walls. This could be achieved by allowing the combining of a sketched flange face by created a sketch bend(tried in Image 3) and allowing the flange creation between them(like a sweep with 2 guides. Fusion is able to flatten this geometry easily if you trick it a bit but the corners/bends where you have to add material will never be the same.

For those who design packaging and storage containers via the sheet metal application, there is no hollow "material" for this in the dropdown list. Corrugated materials for such projects are made from either cardboard or extruded polyethylene.

I would like to ad in an idea for unfolding material such as foam sheet, Balsa or Plywood. Many model makers that build wings would love to see this feature since we can then unfold and have a template cut on laser or CNC. What I am wanting to achieve is something that can be cut out of flat 3mm foam sheet for folding into wings as the end result. Generally when I model up a wing for a glider I will use a profile for each end of a half wing, I then loft the end rib profiles to make my solid wing. The wing is tapered slightly on one end, approximately 50% the scale of the first wing profile. I then shell the solid model to 3mm which now gives me a wing that is in its finished state using 3mm foam wrapped around the end profile ribs. However, what I would like to do is turn this outer shell into a sheet metal part and unfold it. This then will give me a pattern for being able to CNC cut the foam sheet so it is ready to be folded to the correct shape. It would be great to have feature to add a small slot at the bend line when creating a flat pattern in sheet metal. The bend line is probably useful for something but there is no simple way to transfer it to something that can be cut. This could be useful for plasma, laser, water jet etc. Currently, I have to draw a small circle at each end of the bend line and extrude through the thickness of the material. (screen shot attached

I think Fusion 360 should add a feature that will let you optimize a file which will be CNC milled. What this feature should let you choose the material that is going to be milled. Then it should show or let you if a part is too thin/weak, after that it should give the user some options on what you what to do. For example, some of the options could be that to go back and change the thickness or change the thickness for you automatically. This idea can be implemented for 3d printing parts as well, in the same way, the feature could ask what type of material it's going to be printed as, then it could what microns its printing to, and then do the same as what I have said above. Sheet Metal often requires a conic section or the ability to create a transition piece along with the ability to create a flat pattern. This would be a great addition to the Fusion sheet metal package.

The ability to add a centerline to a slot created in the model, that is to the 1/2 of the overall width (length) & 1/2 of the height, and the ability to dimension to the centerline of the slot identical to dimensioning to the centerlines of circles. Since there is the ability to create a slot using the center of the slot, why not dimension to the same center.

Would be nice to have 2 features added to Sheet metal side. 1. Close corners command similar to how solidworks does. You can select corner faces and then pick how you want the corners to overlap or butt up to each other. Now it seems have to use offset face tool on each corner face to close up a corner and it takes awhile and doesn't automatically update if I make changes to metal thickness etc. 2. Offset flange. In addition to inside/ outside/ adjacent, there should be an offset selection to extend the flange out from the current edge. This should also work with the symmetric/ two side edge selection. This would make it easy to extend a narrow section out from a wider edge. Would save having to do a seperate cut command on a longer, wider edge.

When you unfold a sheet metal body: , it would be great if the bend line was also shown / created (as a construction line) like it is in a flat pattern: . It is a very useful line to use as a reference. I know you can make it manually yourself every time, but that is quite a lot of work. I use it to create slots along the bend line to make it easier to bend metal yourself for prototypes. PS: It is a pain in the .... that if you forget to select "Board" when submitting an idea before you write the details, then all the details are wiped and you can start over again after having selected Ideastation. And it is the only board you can select when you submit an idea. Couldn't you ask the community / forum guys to look at that together with sorting screencasts dropdown my name or date. I have asked them before, but nothing really seems to happen in the board development part. Thanks Hoegge

Desperately need corner seam feature. Without this feature really restricts the way you have to model sheet metal parts. lofted flange would also be very useful saving a lot of work arounds at present. Also keyboard shortcuts especially space bar to repeat a command. Best regards Matt

I am adding a channel to a frame and would like the flange to go from edge to edge, and not by measuring or entering a distance so that the flange will stay the same length as the frame, so by changing the frame, the flange will update automatically. Maybe this is possible but I don't seem to get the tools to do this, please help Kind regards Marius

I would like to see Fusion 360 be able to use the "Export Face As" feature used in Inventor. With sheet metal, or even without, I would like to be able to select the face of the flat pattern, right click, and export it as a DWG of DXF. Right now I have to create a new sketch, project, and save the sketch as a DXF.

When creating a contour flange with an open sketch, there doesn't seem to be a way to select reference geometry for the extrusion distance. You can snap to objects, but this just sets the length and the design will not update properly if other geometries change. It's not parametric.

So we are using the ability to flatten a sheet metal shape as a work around for not having a proper bend tool in fusion. The k value controls where the distortion as a result of the bending takes place (somewhere between the top face and bottom face of the sheet metal part). Right now there is no way to prevent the top face of an object that has been attached to a sheet metal part from deforming when bent. That is because we cannot define the k value to be greater than 1. There are also times when bending Plexiglas by heating it along a line that a - k value would be of use, because some fabrication techniques will cause both the top and bottom faces to stretch, with no compression.

Hey there, I think a really nice and productive update is to merge the scale with the move tool, just like it is in the Sculpt room. This will also take care of the issue of having to create a point to scale a body from the center of mass, which to me, seems like an extra unnecessary step. The tool is already merged into one in the Sculpt room, so it shouldn't be too difficult to make this happen for all the other rooms (Model, Patch, Sheet Metal, etc) and also for sketches. Either way a single "check" solution to scale or move from center of mass could be a huge time saver as well.

Obviously the physics is a bit different, but it'd be great if the sheet metal library had papers and card stocks for packaging design It'd be awesome to import die lines and build my packaging or design the packaging in F360 and export die lines

Generate shortcuts for normal camera angles like front view, right view, isometric, etc, using shortcuts like ctrl 1, ctrl 2 or shift 1, just like Solidworks.

When you are assembling a spring or spring clip to another component and there needs to be a spring value by over bending fold could this be added. This would function in a flat spring clip type component where the drawing shows a finished angle of fold which would be less in un sprung form as shown in attached image

Fusion gives an automatic call out of the bend angle, of a sheet metal part in drawings of the outside angle. I would like the ability to switch this to the inside angle because this is the angle we enter at the press brake controller. In the picture below Fusion calls out the 60 degree angle in drawings. I need it to call out the inside angle of 120 degrees with out manually typing it in.

It would be helpful to be able to create multiple flat patterns in a single component. Designing sheet metal bodies in a single component makes sense from a workflow standpoint and the workaround to get flat patterns after using copy/paste-new is less than ideal. Either allow the use of multiple flat patterns in a component or allow us to copy/paste a sheet metal body into a new component and be able to create a flat pattern. Like a derived component inside a single file. It can be done with copy/paste new but streamlining it would help.

It smashes everything together when viewing this from the main forum. Open it, and prepare to be inspired! 😃 Expanding the capabilities of the Align Tool. A simple and super convenient way to do it, add a drop down option in the Align Tool to include a 3 point selection align. 3 Point Alignment Origin Points select 1st point select 2nd point select 3rd point Target Points select 1st point select 2nd point select 3rd point Select 3 points on each of the features, 1 aligns with 1, 2 aligns with 2, 3 aligns with 3. DONE. 8) The mating feature would automatically move and rotate to match the 6 points together. This would be especially useful when mating compound curved surfaces/faces together. I understand there are "work-arounds" for this, but when I think of lining features up, naturally the align tool comes to mind. It would be great if you don't have to jump around from sheet metal to model to do a pattern. It would be even greater if all gets merged together so you can do model, sheet metal, form, patch, render and animation in one workspace. But I do understand that that would make the menus very complicated like 3Ds Max. But surely you can add pattern to sheet metal work space. Kind regards Marius

when I cut a shape into sheet metal, the edge does not end up tangent, and makes it impossible to add another flange to the end. When you trim sheet metal in Pro E Creo the edge always end up tangent, and you can add more flanges to the newly cut shape. Please fix this bug. Kind regards Marius

when deleting a file/folder Fusion sometimes says that the file is being used in another file. Instead of that prompt, it should tell you saying what files it is being used it and where that file is.

A lot of rectangular and round tubes are laser cut these days. Please expand the functionality of sheet metal so that tubes can also be cut properly, with the cuts always perpendicular to the surface of the tube. Here are some screen shots from Creo as an example. Tubes need to be designed the way in which they are actually cut by the machine! This is the way Fusion360 would make a cut in a tube (correct me if I am wrong, I have barely used it) 2. Hi, The Sheet Metal workspace is one of the best features if wasn't the best to be added lately to Fusion 360, and after trying to model multiple things using it, I thought this ... It would be GREAT if the create menu in the sheet metal environment had all the usual create features, such as revolve and loft ( especially these two ) Regards

Hey, I'm new to Fusion 360, I have been doing 3D modelling for almost 15 to 20 years now, and I must say I love it, very powerful. And it seems you listen to feedback from all corners of the trade. I myself have been in metal construction for all my life as I grew up in it. We own a laser/waterjet/milling/lathe's etc.. so it's very nice to see this software being so powerful as it already is. One thing I'd like to see, if possible, is an apply button so you can change rules on the fly in some of the windows. I made an example in my attached image to show my meaning. Great software package. However ,I would really appreciate, as I am sure many other users would, a sheet metal rolling function (e.g. cylinders, cones U shaped flat sheet).Many projects require cylindrical shapes, as there is no function to roll a cylinder in Fusion, you are always forced to look at another package to do the sheet metal rolling part of the project. It would certainly be a benefit to be able to do a complete project with one package.
