File Check-in and Check-out

File Check-in and Check-out

Because of the A360 file cloud storage which in many instances works pretty fantastic I think at one point to prevent two people working on the same file, adding a Checked-Out Checked-In feature would be very helpful.

Idealy when I want to open a design I should see if somebody else is working on it right now, and if yes, blocking me from editing it, till the person who checked it out  closed it, syncs and after finishing the sync Fusion checks-in the design making it available for others to open.

I think this is brilliant.

I just tested onShape a CAD modeler running in the browser and beeing fully in the cloud 😉

Impressive was that they displayer other users working on the same design the same way as Google Docs shows it.

Pretty awesome. But I can see many problems there as well. How often is it the case two would work on the same design?

Well honestly I never had it because in the conceptual phase I dont want anybody to mess around. I am curious how others experienced this. Specifically working in a team that is global. So for me a log in log out seems saver.

The check in/check out system is very similar to a doc review system my lawyer wife users. While it may not happen often during collaboration, I could see this being a vital feature when needed.

If you really want to work together at the same time - thats true. But then to do this the data really has to be in the cloud like in onshape or google docs.

@cekuhnen Only one copy of the data has to be in the cloud -- the local version can be in either the cad executable or the browser executable. Changing in one plave and updating everywhere is possible. As you said, the use cases for simultaneous editing are pretty small -- for simultaneous viewing, there is greater need. In the short term, we think having branching, merging and version control of designs is more important. Later in the year, you'll see some stuff combining the two

@carl_bass Really looking forward to the branching and merging. That will be an interesting area. I can only assume this might be hard to program. So far we always used indivual saved designs. But well we all know this is not really the best way.

If diffing and merging works well, it'll be incredible!

@cekuhnenOne thing that you mentioned above is that that you were interested in knowing if two people were currently working on the same design.  Fusion can do this today.  If you look at the "information area" of a particular design in the Fusion Data Panel you will notice this:

Screen Shot 2015-03-30 at 1.09.30 PM.png

See the label that says "In use by:" right under the name of the design and notice it says "Me".  This is stating that I am currently editing this design.  If others were also editing this design right now you would see their names listed too.  When I am done editing, this value will become empty (if I open and close the information area to refresh it).

I hope this helps solve at least part of the problem you are having using Fusion.

My bad, i accidently logged the response using a test account.  I am an employee of Autodesk and thought I should let you know...

I know that s display I however was referring to seeing the changes a second person does on the fly. And how are design changes two work on synced?/what prevents us from editing the same feature for example?

There is work being done to make this experience better without having true check in/check out.

I have to say Onshapes approach to editing in one file ala Google Docs online is fantastic.
