Extrude: Objects to Cut Selection Interface Enhancements

Extrude: Objects to Cut Selection Interface Enhancements

All,

Good afternoon!  I have been working in Fusion 360 and see a couple of potential enhancements to the Extrude Cut, particularly when adjusting the affected components / bodies.

1. Within the expanded area one cannot mouse wheel scroll through that list.  It would be great if one could click on one of the objects in there and then scroll down the list using the mouse wheel.

2. It appears that one can only select / deselect one object at a time in the list.  It would be great to introduce standard shift / ctrl clicking to be able to quickly work through this list, particularly if the list is a bit longer.

Just a couple of quick hit interface suggestions and I've attached an image below.  If anyone has any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.  Hope all is well and have a most blessed day!

Maybe even a Select/Deselect all would be nice.

yeah good idea

the auto cut thing is often annoying when using more complex models

.. and objects to cut expanded by default. Why it is expandable anyway?

Two more suggestions:

  • As the dialog is resized, the Objects to Cut List should also increase in size/length.
  • Perhaps column width control would also be useful.

All the enhancements suggested here should also apply to the drawing workspace when creating section views.

Jerry

Also when deselecting bodies...i have no idea which body i'm deselecting. It gets difficult to see which bodies i want to cut and which ones i don't.

Regarding objects to be cut, would selecting or deselecting objects in the canvas (graphics window) be useful?

This could be beneficial if you do not recognize the body name in the palette list, but can visually identify it in the model.

Jerry, that could be a useful function as well.  Hope all is well and have a most blessed night!

Hey Jerry,

Yea, that would be, as long as the items being selected in the window can be visually highlighted in blue (like when you select something directly looks like)  in the model as well.

Could someone please tell me why you would ever want to make a cut in an active component and have it modify other components?

This seems like dangerous and sloppy modeling to me.

Dangerous because you can accidentally modify a component and not notice it (e.g. a blind hole on a hidden surface).

Sloppy because, yeah it might save a couple of clicks sometimes, but it can make a mess out of your design. You wind up with features in one component (or several) that are dependent on sketches in other components. Come back to your model six months later and you will will have no idea how those features got there. In software development this would be considered spaghetti code - very bad practice.

A more deliberate workflow would be to make the cut in one component, then activate another component and use project* to copy the profile to make a new cut. This also allow you to make variations - e.g. a hole that is a press-fit in one component and a slip-fit in another.

*F360 is actually more careful than other CAD program in some ways. The project tool forces you to be deliberate about referencing off-plane geometry in a sketch, rather than just allowing sketch constraints to features that are anywhere in the model. The cut-into-any-component-anytime approach goes in the opposite direction.
