Construction Line

I would like to be able to draw a construction line directly, and not have to draw a line and then convert it to a construction line.

You can do this by toggling the construction geometry format button to 'on' before you start drawing.

Yup, Just like @PaulMunford said, just activate the construction option before you draw the line. You can do this via the Sketch Pallette or by using the shortcut key "x".
