Configurations similar to solidworks

Configurations similar to solidworks

F360 seems to have all the motion functionality with joints etc but no way of setting up a model using different configurations.

Using configurations similar to how solidworks does is a really useful tool. Surely it is something that can be easily adapted to F360?

On then pricing page for Fusion 360 Ultimate there is a link named "what's the difference" ( between Fusion 360 and Fusion 360 Ultimate).

On the little pop-up page following that link it lists configurations under Ultimte as coming soon.

In addition to configurations, an equivalent to SolidWorks design tables is needed.  We frequently design products with 30 to 90 configurations typically, which are generated by the design tables.  There is no other practical way to do the job without having design tables controlling configurations.  In turn, CAMWorks (a SolidWorks add-on) references each configuration to create toolpaths for each one just by toggling between them.  The design table doesn't need to be excel based, it just needs to be a table.

Thank you for your idea.  We have plans to provide our users with a way to approach configurations in the future.  We will use this opportunity to explore how configurations have been done in the past and challenge ourselves with what can be done to enhance customers experience in creating configurations.   We may not implement it the exact same way as SolidWorks as you mention.

I find configurations to be an essential time saver.  Many parts are very similar, with just a few extra holes or other features differing between them.  Configuartions make this very easy to deal with.

I've seen requests for excel/csv driven parts, but I'm looking for something a bit more simple and internal to Fusion.

I would like to be able to generate multiple variations on a design from one file. Let's say I have these parameters:

cable_diameter = 1 mm

wall_thickness = 2.4 mm

For all of the parts, wall_thickness should remain the same, but the diameter needs to change. Normally I would favorite 'cable_diameter' so I know that is the parameter I want to change. It would be nice if there was a way to enter multiple sets of the same parameter(s) and give them a name. So for instance, in the parameter entry palette, a new group called 'Parameter Variations':

Parameter Variations

Favorites

User Parameters

Model Parameters

When expanded, 'Parameter Variations' would allow you to add variations on your original parameters. In this group I could then create sets of parameters:

cable 1

cable_diameter = 2mm

cable 2

cable_diameter = 3mm

etc...

Only favorites would be part of these variations, or by default they would match the User Parameters unless overridden.

This might be fairly complex to implement - there would need to be an interface to select which set of parameters to use (a radio button like selecting a component in the browser). I would also want the ability to export as an stl - either the current variation or all variations.

have a look in the API section there is something super close to what you won't it was done by  @MichaelAubry  it's on his git page

There is a very similar Idea already in the Idea station :

The idea is marked as Future Consideration.

Nice - thanks for the links! I'll give a couple of these a try.

Configurations are essential to make this viable for our applications

I also have used configurations extensively in soldiworks and whilst the design tables are a necessary evil, you are often forced to figure out every possible variation you can think of, then to use excel to create the table that you would then import into solidworks and hope for the best.

Whilst at the moment this is the best approach we have; I find it very limiting. The reason for this is that when you create a configuration you can only select 1 configuration at a time (which can contain multiple different dimension changes).

As an example, If you had a dining table that was 1500 x 700 and you wanted to create different variations based on the width and length (or even wood type, finish, colour etc) then you would need to make 1 configuration for every possible option. E.g.

1. Tabletop "1500" x "700" "Beech"

2. Tabletop "1500" x "900" "Beech"

3. Tabletop "1800" x "700" "Beech"

4. Tabletop "1800" x "900" "Beech"

5. Tabletop "1200" x "700" "Beech"

6. Tabletop "1200" x "900" "Beech"

7. Tabletop "1500" x "700" "Mahogany"

8. Tabletop "1500" x "900" "Mahogany"

9. Tabletop "1800" x "700" "Mahogany"

10. Tabletop "1800" x "900" "Mahogany"

11. Tabletop "1200" x "700" "Mahogany"

12. Tabletop "1200" x "900" "Mahogany"

This is not the best example, but you can see how repetitive this can get. It's even harder to do in soldiworks manually without the use of Excel.

What I'd really like to see is multiple configuration dropdown lists in Fusion 360. This way instead of having to sit there and figure out what configurations you need, you can just test it on the computer and see the results, then save those configurations to a list (which would save the need for excel at all and you could visually see the results of all configurations, rather than just guessing in excel)

So there would be 2 important parts to this feature.

1. Parameters would need the option to contain a list of different dimensions/data. You could call it "Parameter Ranges". These would be easily selectable from a toolbar or something on the main screen.

2. Configurations could be saved from specifying multiple parameter ranges and saving the name for them. And maybe even having nested configurations within configurations.

This would be very powerful, as you could save a set of common materials, finishes, colours, lengths, diameters, profiles etc) and then simply tie those parameter lists to your model/assembly and then quickly check to see what looks/works best for the design.

I think the core feature of it could be reused a bunch of times in other places as well.

Without a spreadsheet how would you allow concatenate, equations, if/then
statements, and other functions control the configurations? Or how would
you generate a table in a drawing that shows all the configuration
parameters with conditional formatting? That functionality exists in
SolidWorks and some companies rely on it. A UI to help set up a design
table could be helpful. A design table must be a full-blown spreadsheet or
else it's power and the power of the whole CAD system is greatly reduced.

This idea has been in Future consideration for more than a year and a half. Configurations are very useful and I keep coming across parts that i have to design which i have to keep the same geometry but get different configurations. And as far as i know alot of people come across such parts. I really hope this idea is accepted. I came across this idea because i come on the forum to find out how to make configurations through a table in fusion 360. I have to make like 20 configurations of a part which i could basically do with a formula and in a spreadsheet i would do it in 2 mins after designing the basic part

I'm loving Fusion more and more but the inability to create configurations is a real show-stopper. I use configurations for both product and assembly variations. Without configurations, the workflow and file management burdens for anything but the simplest static designs are exponentially higher. Please consider making this a development priority.

I'd like to chime in on this topic also. In my projects configurations, design tables, and equations are absolutely critical, show-stopping deal-breakers.

It's what's keeping me on SW, and I'm really trying to get off and on to a cloud-based platform.

Please consider upping the priority from "Future Consideration" to at least "We'll figure it out shortly" 🙂

Thank you.

Every now and then I get optimistic and start thinking this may have been introduced, but alas still nothing, I guess i need to try some of these github solutions.

I'm baffled how this is still absent. In my opinion configurations are in integral in any design (not to mention production) workflow: build a basic example, use variations on this that are still parametrically controlled.

remaining hopefully (and resisting the urge to go back to SW)
