When you change units under preferences, the changes don't go into effect in the CAM panel until you start a whole new file. Saving your existing file as a file with a new name does not work either.
I would suggest that having "document level" unit choices would be great, or even having both units shown in a field, the primary units are selectable and render as black on the white field, while the alternate units are in the white space adjacent, are not selectable, and are a mid-tone gray.
