CAM: Add option in Facing operation to spiral from the outside to inside

CAM: Add option in Facing operation to spiral from the outside to inside

With the current straight line facing operation, the last pass usually pushes a burr over the edge of the part with materials like aluminum.  An outside-in spiral path eliminates this because the cutting edge is always moving towards the work piece instead of away from it.  Ideally this would also be combined with the chip thinning option to produce a constant engagement angle path that reduces stress on insert type cutters commonly used for facing.

The spiral path type is also likely to be more time efficient because it maintains consistent contact with the part instead of going off the edge on every pass.

This is also the preffered path, for me, when using an end mill to face the top of a part.  A very handy machining strategy.

In HSMWorks we have support for using the Adaptive toolpath face a part.

We are working to add that support to Fusion 360

Would this solve your needs?

Hi Al,

In HSMXpress I usually use 2DAdaptive for facing and it mostly works quite well.  The only issue I have is that it leaves cusps if the tool does not have perfectly sharp square corners.  I know that one is being worked on also, so to answer the question; yes.  Enabling only stock selections for 2DAdaptive (and the material overlap thing whenever it's worked out) would probably cover about 95% of what I need for facing.  The other 5% would be situations where I'm just doing something really odd and for whatever reason the regular facing strategy works better.

Having said that, it still seems weird for the roughing strategy to be better at facing than the dedicated facing strategy.  Not that it *really* matters as long as there is a way to get the job done.

I've use 3d spiral to face cut which seems to work well, but unable to lead in horizontally plan off the part. I cheat it by making model dia. larger. Other issue is, the select start point doesn't work with spiral. Need to choose a different start point to avoid clamp collision.

Al,

Another explanation why this is necessary here by sandvik: https://www.sandvik.coromant.com/en-gb/knowledge/milling/getting_started/general_guidelines/keep_cut...

This can be done using adaptive clearing.

@al.whatmough, so does this mean the overlap issue (leaving cusps on the final pass) has been fixed?  If so that would be most awesome!

Yes, as you can see the last pass has an offset.
