I really, really like Fusion 360—but there are a few little things that I find very annoying with the way that it works on macOS.
- The installer and updater adds a shortcut to the dock when a new version is installed. macOS apps should never, ever add a shortcut to themselves to the dock. I am not aware of a single other reputable app that does this.
- If the user has left the Fusion icon in the dock, every update will move it to the end of the dock. Again, the installer should not be messing with what is in the dock. Please explore other methods for linking up with the new releases that do not involve directly manipulating dock items.
- The icon is too big. It is an almost universally established convention with square icons to inset the edges for visual uniformity with other icons. For example, the bounding box of round icons needs to be bigger than that of square icons in order for the icons to appear roughly the same size. This causes the Fusion 360 icon to appear glaringly out-of-place on the macOS dock. I am not aware of a single other reputable piece of macOS software that breaks this convention.
- The Fusion 360 Launchpad icon cannot be dragged into the dock.
- In both Launchpad search results, the uninstaller tends to appear before the main app and is the default item selected.
- In Spotlight search results (one of my most frequent methods of launching apps), only the uninstaller comes up.
- BONUS: It would be super, super awesome if you integrated better with the system menu bar! Besides appearing more familiar, friendly, and native to Mac users who are new to Fusion, integrating with the menu bar allows the use of the system's built-in menu bar search functionality, which makes it easy for new users to find certain hidden features using a method they are already familiar with from other apps.
Again, Fusion is a fantastic app—but it seems like with a little TLC, the macOS version could be made a lot better in a way that would minimally impact ongoing development in the main codebase.
