avoiding Black data panel on some laptops

Like several people I have had the black data panel problem. Oddly it only happens when the laptop is plugged into A/C. (It's an HP EliteBook i7). The Data panel works as normal when on battery power. It would seem that some sort of power management is causing problems. I guess the laptop modifies the GPU settings to preserve power -and fusion 360 data panel likes that. I could not track it down though.
