Assigning parameters with dimensioning box

Assigning parameters with dimensioning box

image.png
For example if you're doing something like a parametric hinge, you want to say fillet an edge you press F to enter that mode select the face drag it to what you think is acceptable, say for this example, it's 2mm. Then personally I think you should be able to enter a name for the fillet radius and it assigns it to the 2mm without entering the change parameter dialog but rather the small box that appears when dimensioning parts of your design.

It would be nice if while you were dimensioning in the sketcher you could type a new parameter name that did not exist, hit enter and the parameter creation dialog would automatically pop up.

Thanks,

please please please do this! Make it like Inventor "Length=500"

This is possible with inventor "ParameterName=4" works for example.

Yes, parameter should be easy like dimension = D and when F360 asks for dimention box, we can enter like Size=4 so that Size will be parameter and 4 will be value of that parameter and it may go beyond that, Size=4[1-5] where range =1 to 5 and default value is 4. as mentioned by OliverJ ....

+1 for the idea. It would speed up sketching quite a bit for me.

I love Fusion 360, and I love the modular ability it provides with Parameters. However, it is quite a hassle to create Parameters within the current workflow. Having to create the sketch, then do my extrusion, and set the Parameters after, or creating them before and trying to set the model is a pain.

My suggestion would be to allow the creation of parameters during the sketch process. When you set a dimension you can start typing the Parameter name, like you would do with any value, then you'll be re-prompted to type the default value. This would allow me to quickly create parameters and tweak them later.

I do think also the Parameters section needs some love. Would love to see the ability to group them, use arrow keys to increment and decrement the values, and maybe have a basic UI elements to range the Parameters.

Thanks,
Nate

In Inventor it is possible to name parameters - When prompted for value, just type in parameter name followed by equal sign and value/expression and the parameter will be named for later reference.

This is a fast naming feature I use a lot in Inventor, maybe this could be implemented in Fusion 360 too.

This sounds similar to this request, which was promoted to Future consideration in June.

I'm still upvoting this one, though - the Parameters section deserves some love 🙂

Exactly and the way to create with just typing e.g.:

diameter = 12 mm

is obvious and would save a lot of time

hi OliverJ,

this has been asked for before (I've merged previous requests with yours), and we do have this in our development backlog.  We are going to re-review the backlog item and see what we can do to up it's priority.  Will keep you posted on when we plan to start working on this.

Upvoted, goodness me the frustration! Legitimately worth returning to Inventor because of this - either you model at a snail pace, or you give up on it and your model becomes hopelessly disorganised 😞

Is there any news on this yet? It's been a while since it's been marked a 'Future Consideration'.

I understand software development takes a lot of time and resources, but it seems like the Fusion team prioritises pushing out half-baked new functions, instead of trying to make the core of Fusion more solid, especially in the field of parametric modelling...

I do agree with this, there is a strong subset of individuals looking for better parametric control. There needs to be some restructuring and development for this ui system.

So is This going to happen? It would make life for many people who use parameters a lot (including me) significantly easier. The formatting suggested in the thread so far would be perfect.

(adding data to the other columns of a parameter is fine in the popup window)

Cmon, this has been down for "Future Consideration" for 5 years. We're now officially in the future. Do the right thing 😄
