Appearance by Feature
Apply appearances to all faces relevant to a given feature. allows multi-material bodies to be appropriate colored much more quickly than, say, coloring each face of a USB dongle (including fillets) separately.
Hey @Anonymous - thanks for posting your idea here.
Today, you can drag a material onto a body or component in your canvas browser, which will override all faces in that component or body to be that new material.
Is this the kind of functionality you're looking for?
@TimeraAutodesk not quite. I would love to ability to color faces, bodies, *or features*. Much like the "create pattern" tool has the ability to pattern faces, bodies, or features. For example, if I put a pocket in a body, I would like to be able to color all the faces that correspond with that pocket at once. Does that make more sense?
I came here today to ask for this exact thing. I know exactly what myles.cooper is talking about.
I'd like to drag an appearance onto an feature in the timeline, and all faces created by that feature get that appearance.
For example, say I create a sphere, and drag "Red" into the sphere item in the timeline. The sphere becomes red.
Then, I extrude a square through the center of the sphere, creating a square hole through the middle of the sphere. If I drag the appearance "Green" onto the extrude operation in the timeline, all the faces that make up the square hole become green, while the sphere remains red.
Then I make a fillet around the square hole, and drag "Yellow" onto the fillet icon in the timeline. The faces of the fillet become yellow.
So the end result is a red sphere with a green hole in it, with yellow fillets around the hole.
I'd also like it if the face appearances survived a 'combine' operation. Maybe I want to join a white cylinder to the sphere, coming out of the side. After the combine, I should end up with a red sphere, green hole, yellow fillets, and a white cylinder attached to it. And, if I want to turn the whole thing blue, I should drag "Blue" onto the 'combine' icon in the timeline.
So often I spend a lot of time applying different appearances to thousands of teeny faces on one object, only to go back into the timeline to alter one small thing, and the final appearances either get scrambled or disappear completely. I think by incorporating appearances into the timeline as described, it'll save a huge amount of time dressing up the final product, be more intuitive and persistent, and make the appearance system's behavior seem less random.
