Allow multiple target bodies in Combine Tool

Allow multiple target bodies in Combine Tool

When you use the Cut portion of the Combine Tool, you have the option to have a single target body and multiple tool bodies, but if I want to cut a single thing out of multiple bodies, I'm stuck doing several iterations of the Combine tool.

Can we have the option for multiple target bodies as well as multiple tool bodies?  I'd rather take a bit more time for it to do calculations on multiple bodies than have to go through the combine tool multiple times.

yep very much agree - the cool part of the design timeline is that we create relationships between objects and how they interact via tools. So this propsoed feature would help a lot - specifically also with keep tool entries in the design timeline low.

I agree that this would be useful.  I think that we could allow selection of multiple target bodies from within the same component, but it would be difficult to allow selection of multiple target bodies from different components.  Are your target bodies typically in the same component?

Thanks,

Charles

Generally, yes, the target bodies I want are always in the same component, usually the top-level component in the design.  Is there some reason having target bodies from different components in the same design would be an issue?

Thanks for the reply.  For cut operations, selecting target bodies from multiple components would likely not be a problem.  Join operations, however, become tricky.  If you select a target body from Component A and another from Component B and perform a Combine Join operation with some other tool body, there are multiple potential results:

  • Result of Combine operation is created in Component A
  • Result of Combine operation is created in Component B
  • Result of Combine operation is created in the Top-Level component
  • Result of Combine operation is created in a new component
  • More (there are a few permutations of the above results regarding keeping/removing one of the tool bodies)...

While there are likely some technical challenges, I'd say that cross-body Combine could be done, but the related UI could get messy.  Alternatively, constraining the selection of target bodies to within the same component may be sufficient for many (most?) workflows and could vastly simplify the implementation and the user experience (and improve the chances that it will be implemented in the near term).

Hope this makes sense.

That makes enough sense.  With the cross-body Join, it doesn't really matter how many target bodies there are vs tool bodies, they all become one, right?  I think the biggest concern is more with being able to Cut through multiple bodies.  Thanks for the explanation!

Adding this enhancement to the solid backlog.

This is a big one. I need to be able to cut many bodies with one tool! Please consider this another vote for this feature / bug fix.

Thanks,

Rob

+1 for me, trying to cut a shape to different body parts, right before extruding them so the cutting can be levelled differently.

Would be much appreciated !

I have two soft jaws in my vice. I place my complex part in the jaws and I need to subtract the part from both jaws at the same time to produce my profile to machine away. Having multiple targets would be very helpful. Is there a work around? Or how can I grab my profile and extrude it into the jaws and combine/cut that way? Thanks

I agree with need for selecting multiple target bodies.  I would have used this for cutting many times.  Have not yet had the need to join, though.

This is very basic stuff. I have a back of a cabinet that I want to slide in a grove made on all 4 items, in this case 2 gables, top and bottom.

It should be as easy as selecting the back and subtracting from the 4 items.

Cut multiple targets is a top necessity, no doubt.

Hi guys,

I think some of us might be forgeting that we can sketch a profile to cut many bodies/components at once.

Not me. 🙂 Different feature, different workflow. Although I do really appreciate the ability to choose which bodies to cut with an extrude. I'd like combine to have that option as well.

I really miss this function too

And I've just posted another idea which is slightly related to this one, please throw in your vote if you are interested: Allow using components in Combine too Thanks!

I was going to create the same topic! Good thing I searched first.

Here is an example where this would be perfect:
Creating a model airplane wing structure. Right now I have to select each little rectangle as target, and select each planking and spars as tools. Would be so much better to select all rectangles, and cut at once.2018-05-01 14_21_07-Autodesk Fusion 360 (Startup License).png
Also looks like I discovered what might be a bug while doing this, which I will report separately.
Thanks for having submitted this idea.

+1 from me. Could use that possibility a lot of times
