After working with Fusion 360, creating some complex projects, I really miss parameters which are valid for a whole project. If this feature is implemented correctly, it can really boost the design of complex projects.
Idea / Feature Request
- Fusion360 can add one or more project parameter files to any project.
- This parameter file can be opened and edited like a regular design.
- All project parameter files are versioned like the designs.
- Each design can reference one or more project parameter files.
- If parameter files are changed, a warning is displayed and the parameters can be updated.
- Parameter files can be imported and exported in a number of formats (CSV).
Reasons / Explainations
To understand my idea/feature request better, let me explain the way how I use design parameters.
Gearbox
This is the (work in progress) gearbox from a device. It is produced with laser cut plywood. This design is fully parametric, especially the thickness of the plywood is defined as parameter. One reason is the incremental design process. With the progress, more and more dimensions get clear - therefore I like to make small adjustments at a later time.
Parameters
Many of these parameters are not just valid for this design, but for the whole project. If Fusion360 would be able to handle complex projects, I would just put everything in the same design, but because of the limitations I have to split the project in many small design blocks.
All this design "blocks" share some parameters, like the thickness of the plywood or the diameter of pilot holes. These are parameters I would like to be able to change in a final phase for the whole project.
Currently I have to carefully change the parameters for the smallest parts, update the references walking down the "include tree" until I can change the parameter in the main assembly. This is not only time consuming, but also dangerous. At any point I can e.g. adjust the parameter to a wrong value, which could cause all kinds of errors.
