CLOSED - Keyboard Shortcuts for more than just commands

Last summer we introduced custom keyboard shortcuts for all commands in the toolbar. We wanted to provide this functionality for a long time, and the number of votes that have accumulated in the IdeaStation reflected the need for this from the community.

Now that we have this, we’ve been hearing requests to expand on the ability to have shortcut keys for other areas of the software, such as Viewcube views, browser > isolate component, etc. What are your top 3 areas of Fusion 360 you’d like to have a shortcut key for? Do you agree with this priority?

Priority 1: Arrow keys for Viewcube views and shortcut for Home view

Priority 2: Component/body Isolate and Unisolate from Browser

Priority 3: New document creation

@Anonymous I agree, that would be a horrible workflow, but I were just trying to figure out how to realize what I imagine you want. I am not interested in understanding anymore.

@hpekristiansen  I don't know what you're confused about... If I'm I hit 'V" that hides all Components, If I hit say "B"  that hides all the bodies, If I hit say "N"  that hides all the sketches without clicking anything. If go into a component then only hides that- part, sketch and bodies and so on without clicking anywhere.

Thanks for the comments folks, really appreciate the input. My intent here is to be transparent about what we are thinking, and get a sense of what you're thinking, and yes, these things need to be prioritized because everyone has different requirements. Keep in mind that something that may seem completely left field to you may have been someone else's top priority. You'd think implementing something like this sounds easy on the surface, but there is a lot of code behind the UI that needs to be considered, tested and retested to ensure we don't break something or conflict with an existing paradigm.

I forgot to add to my second priority: spacebar to execute last command, spacebar could/ should also be used to confirm an existing command. For instance, rather than clicking on the green arrow after drawing a spline, one could hit spacebar with the same result.

Hello.

Is there a shortcut for Zoom Window? I miss it, since I'm a long time AutoCAD user. Also a way to change the scroll wheel magnification increment while zooming would be nice. The view cube arrows shortcut is obviously needed, as mentioned before.

Unless I've missed it, I don't think Fusion has implemented a stop/escape/cancel keyboard command like this. I need to force-quit and restart Fusion sometimes dozens of times a day because of runaway processes, and it's unbelievably infuriating. If a process is running and the user hits ESC, it should interrupt the process. That would be my top request for a keyboard shortcut by far.

I am quite excited to see that an Isolate/un-isolate toggle key may be in the works, this could really improve my workflow with complex assemblies!

Another keyboard shortcut key I would find helpful.. the good ol' repeat last command shortcut.  I know all I currently need to do is right-click and select, but I can't help but think that if I had a keyboard shortcut I'd be using it all the time.

It has a few posts already so I wont steal anyone's glory but if we could get shortcuts to incramentally shift the timeline back and forth that would save a lot of dragging the cursor around. No idea where it ranks on the general priority list but it is fairly high up my own.

I agree with others that tab to cycle through fields is #1.

A related thing that I would like to see (probably not a shortcut though) is the ability to switch between ribbons with the scroll wheel as in Office, Creo and other programs. Scrolling while hovering anywhere over the ribbon would cycle through the different ones. (Solid -> Surface -> Sheet metal and so on)

Another good thing Creo have as well is that you can scroll through dropdowns while just hovering above it with the cursor. Every mouse click and movement we can remove really makes life easier.

Thanks @keqingsong

I'd say my top list is

1st - tab for next input field (combine, sweep, split face, split body) - an absolute must have

2nd - isolate/ unisolate

3rd - properties, remove, find in window

Frankly, see no any need for hotkeys for new document and viewcube navigation.

Thanks for the continued discussions folks. There are lots of opinions and we're weighing them against feedback from multiple channels, not just this post. We have not forgotten about this, and are still working on it. What may seem simple on the surface isn't really simple in the development end. Introducing new keyboard shortcuts impact a number of different workflows, workspaces, and commands.

A new shortcut for creating a new design document is coming. We're working on repeat last command. Please be patient.

That's good news, can't wait for the new implementations!

Come to think of it, I haven't come across any request for a chaining yes/no shortcut. This would also save quite some mouse movement.

Hi

It would be so nice if we get custom kwyboard shortcuts for pan, zoom and orbit.

Clicking on a part in the browser and hitting v works ok for hiding a part. But much better would be if only hovering over the part with the mouse and then hitting v (or another key) would do the same. This way it would not be necessary to search for the part in the browser. (EDIT: Just noticed that clicking on the part directly (not in the browser) and pressing v works already in the simulation/simplify workspace. This would also be a good solution if it would work in the design workspace, although just hovering + v would be even easier and faster.)

Would be great if the back/forward mouse buttons would work in the file browser. And browsing the file browser by keyboard would also be very helpful (Mac: cmd + uparrow = folder up, cmd + leftarrow = back, arrows = selecting a file, Enter = open folder/file.)

(The file browser itself should be much improved since it is very rudimentary, but that is another topic).

I love that Fusion is focused on keyboard shortcuts! I think they are extremely important for a professional software. SolidWorks for example is so far away from good keyboard support, terrible. Glad I switched the company and can use Fusion now.

I would love to have the ability to add a keyboard shortcut for orbit!  That way I can use the mouse that came with my Mac!

I don't know where to post this idea on fusion 360. But I see there is a tagline "shortcut" in this thread.

So, my idea was to create a woolen thread or any kind through holes selection.

To be brief I need a thread which is going through certain holes in the design and has the felxibility to roll around the pully. I find it difficcult to bring such outcome. can some one have an existing idea on it.

For example the shoe lays covering all the holes.

No, I don't agree with this priority list. Trying to think which are the operations that I execute with time-wasting mouse activities, I get to:

  1. Navigating history
  2. Activating components
  3. Putting negative values to Extrudes to achieve Cut operations (there is no flip button)

Then your 1 And 2 Priorities
