How to use "Insert 2D PCB"

Insert Schematic works fine in Schematic Editor

But switching to the PCB and usng "Insert 2D PCB" just gives error;

"Can't backannotate this operation.

Please do this in the schematic!"

What am I doing wrong here?

Hi @markarm1 ,

I hope you're doing well. You're not doing anything wrong, you see when the schematic and board are consistent the schematic leads the dance and you can not directly insert a 2D PCB, because it won't have it's corresponding schematic added to the schematic editor. The only exception to this is if the 2D PCB does not contain any components (IE it's just a board outline with some silkscreen).

Generally, if you have a consistent board/schematic pair you'll insert the Designblock or schematic in the schematic and then the layout will be automatically added to the 2D PCB.

Thanks Jorge. That make perfect sense. However when I do a test, the schematic is inserted Ok, but the components on the PCB do not have the layout associated with that schematic. I expected Fusion to place the components with the layout from the same electronics design file that the inserted schematic came from.

I hope you're doing well. I figure you are trying to import a schematic that is already in Fusion into the design, correct? After talking to the devs, we have a limitation right now with schematics in Fusion in that the assumptions we can make about an EAGLE file we can't make in Fusion (same name and same directory). So for now the board of a Fusion Team schematic will not come in.

There is a workaround. You could export the board and the schematic and EAGLE files and then do the add schematic in Fusion 360. Select the EAGLE schematic you exported and it will bring the board with it. This is a temporary situation and we hope to resolve it in the next phase of development.

Thanks Jorge. Yes, you are right that the import was already in Fusion. The interest in this feature is that we plan to break a master schematic into smaller manageable pieces eg Debug, USB, Clock etc, which we can then re-assemble into a variety of products using whichever pieces are needed. Having the PCB layout come with each piece will help speed up layout a lot. Hopefully this is how this feature is intended to work when completed, and will support our workflow.
