Tools for creating rounded backrest of a chair

Hi,

I'm working on a chair with the similar backrest as the photo below. I'm curious to know how you would model the bent plywood and secondly the leather upholstery. I have not used the T-spline and sculped tool that much but I guess that would be the best at least for the upholstery part right? If someone could give me direction on what tools they would use, that would be much appreciated.

Hey Martin.eckerberg,

Welcome to the community! This is a job for the Sculpt tools. I recommend starting with the video below to lean how they work-

For the upholstery T-Splines are a good solution, but for all the bent laminate wood pieces I'd use "normal" modeling tools.

Hi,

Thank you for the sculped tutorial I learned a lot but I am still struggling with how to get this right. Attached is my bent plywood back for the chair and what is missing is the soft part that will cover all the inside of the plywood surface very similar to the Eames/Vitra chair. Since the soft part will cover all the plywood on the inside it must be a simple way to achieve this without using sketches and paths?

I believe my concluded question is: Can I project the surface and place a sculpted sheet on that and then start working with t-spline?

Thank you

Martin

IF you can share the model for that backrest I'll see what I can do.

Below is a screencast. Somehow today I could not get in the zone so it's a little clunky, but hopefully it shows the general approach. There are probably a number of other ways in the sculpt workspace can be approached.

Hi,

That's a great example of how to do it. Thank you very much for taking the time to explain, this will help me a lot!
