Press/pull, Offset Faces, results in Error-topology

Howdy,

I am a newby trying to increase the wall thickness on a hollow capsule (medicinal) and get "Error: The operation would cause a large topology change. Try adjusting the values or changing the input geometry." I have resisted asking for a lead or even learning it cannot be done. Everything seems to point back to using Press Pull, Offset Faces but-no dice. Might someone suggest a path forward. I am willing to upload the file if needed.

I sent the file but don't yet see it on the forum. I will send it again in case I have blotched the sending of it. Also, I should have included that it is acceptable to add capsule wall thickness to the outside and leave the inside dimension as is.

Hi,

 

You have a problem here my friend. You used the base feature to create your main body, and used no sketches in the process, which should be defined by the way to work when you edit them ...

so you have no sketches, and the commands you used in the base feature can't be edited ...

One way to do it is to go back to the base feature in the timeline and edit it, delete the curvy face, and you will have to other faces, delete them as well and you'll get something like this, that presspull works on by the way, but you will have to make that curvy face again. But the result might be tricky since the base feature was the first thing to be done in that looong timeline

The base feature might be imported geometry and it is perfectly fine to work without a timeline to model the entire geometry for this design.

Not having a timeline can be very liberating. The limitation of working in direct modeling is the incomplete implementation of direct modeling in Fusion 360.

 

If you want to see how incredibly powerful direct modeling can be you should look at a few Spaceclaim tutorials.

Ot you can work with Designspark, its smaller brother.

Oh boy....I understand the issue. I started out with an existing stl file. The loooong timeline is my equivalent of 1,000 monkeys typing to craft a complete paragraph. So, I will scale it up more than I have presently done so my Ultimate 3, 3D Printer will produce a thicker wall thus a more useable prototype. Then, I will start from the beginning and attempt to create a file that is flexible. I am making "drawings" from this model-might I be able to use them to start the new file? I will backtrack and study what must be done.

Howdy,

I sort of understand-well, no, I don't really understand. It seems that you are telling me that if I begin with this existing stl file, as I did, and work without a timeline, I would be able  to effect dimension editing such as capsule wall thickness; and it follows that it is a simple enough model that I should now be able to create the other modifications without a timeline. Although I don't know where the implementation of Fusion 360 would stop, I think I could say I don't need to advance much further than where I now am. I wish to, and am now making "drawings" from this model, and I already have fashioned and produced Ultimate 3, 3D printed prototypes from this current file. It is roughshod and imperfect but adequate for my present use.

You and SaeedHamza have greatly helped and I will study the alternatives you have suggested, if I can possibly stay with Fusion 360 I will for the learning curve is steep, but at least I have a start and a glimpse of the tools and terminology used. Construction of the manufacturing capable model will likely require more Fusion wise horsepower than I am able to muster.
