Modify a drawing file in Fusion360

Hi all,

High school teacher here. In past years, students were provided the attached .idw file and edit the sketch within Inventor to learn about geometric constraints.

We made the transition to Fusion360 this year. I've been reading up on forums and tried a few things to accomplish the same task in Fusion360 (like using a .dwg format instead), but so far I haven't had any luck.

Any ideas for how to get this to work? Is this even possible? (Shoot, I'd even take links to any kind of interactive tutorials that introduce geometric constraints to high school kids!)

I'm probably overthinking things. Seems like this should be something simple.

Thanks in advance!

You're not going to be able to get an inventor sketch into fusion, even if you export as DWG\DXF you will not get any sketches. If you've been teaching Inventor and now Fusion surely you can recreate the sketch in Fusion. If you need help can you add some screenshots because without Inventor no one can really help. Use the Photos option to include picture, don't just attach as it's a pain to download images just to view.

Hi,

Thanks for the advice! Here is a screenshot of the .idw file that we have used in the past.

5.2a Geometric Constraints.png

As you can probably guess, there is no physical 3D model associated with the file. Since that's required for drawing files in Fusion360, I may just have to ditch this document and come up with something completely new to replace it. It's not a huge deal, but if you (or someone else) has a method for recreating this, I'd still love to hear how to do it.

Thanks again,

Brett

The problem is Fusion has no tools for sketching in the 2d drawing workspace so you'll have to use a sketch in the model workspace. This probably doesn't matter as most sketching will be in the model workspace so your students might as well practice there.

You could export the drawing you have as a DXF file then use insert DXF to transfer the lines and circles but you'll lose the text so you'll need to add the text in Fusion using the text command on the sketch toolbar.

Another thought is you could insert a png file as a canvas with your text and border then just draw in the geometry. I've made a screencast to give you an idea of what I mean. You might want to lock some of the lines to give a more predictable result, in the screencast I lock the 2 lines for the circle tangent to 2 lines for example. I've attached my file, open with New Design from file on the file menu. I think you'll need to make your own PNG file without any geometry, just the border and text and set the background to transparent.
