How to copy drawing(s) too when copying design (or Save as ...)?

If I make a copy of a design, either by copy or save as, it seems I loose the drawing(s) I've made, since they are connected to the original design. How do I copy the drawings too and have them connected to the new copy of the design?

... furthermore I tried to copy a drawing to the same folder, to explore if I could link it to the new file. Which I could not. It now has the same name as the original drawing and cannot be deleted - Fusion says it is in use even after restarting Fusion. Uhm.

Hi,

We will release a new feature: include drawings when copying a design to another folder. The drawings and the design are linked together when copied together.

Hope it helps.

Thank you

What if you need to create a new copy in the same folder?

Create a subfolder in it called "copies"

Thanks @dieselguy65 That can work as a workaround.

@nick.ni : How do I delete the copied drawing that says it is in use? I do not understand how anything else can reference a drawing? Using the web-interface I also get the error message: "Cannot delete selected data. Data is in use or relationships exist on selected data."

Under "used in" on the web interface it says: "This item is not referenced by any other designs.Learn more about distributed designs in Fusion 360."

So is this a bug?

Hi,

It should be bug. Though I cannot reproduce this issue in my machine now, there must be something wrong there. I will continue to investigate it.

You can try this command to see if it can solve this issue: go to Help -> Clear user cache data.

Since it is the same problem, when I try to delete it from the web interface it is probably not a Fusion 360 but a back-end problem.

Hi, when will this new feature be released? I don't see the option to copy the design with drawing on the mac and web version

The workaround that I used so far:

The feature was released in September this year. You should see this feature when copying a design using context menu command in the Side Panel of Fusion 360, in the latest build 2.0. 3706. You can check the version of Fusion 360 through Help->About.

Here some screenshots. I also tried to copy into a new folder

I don't have that checkbox either and also run the latest version 2.0.3706 and cleared the cache only a few days ago. (Win 10 64 bit)

I'm really sorry that the feature hasn't been released after checking with my colleagues. I will consult my colleagues to know the release plan.

Sorry again for the wrong info.

Hi,

I got the info from the team who is working on this feature: we suspend release of this feature due to a technical dependency. Currently there is no definite plan to release it.

Sorry for the wrong info again.

How should that help if you can't copy the drawing with reference to the new copy?

Hi @zhixin.ni

So there is simply no way to copy a design with drawings? That must be a major issue for the professional users. You'cant even copy a whole folder either and there is no way to tag or manage your versions, so you could organize them in some way. That means there is more a less no way to have more than one active version of a design. I'm quite baffled by this and surprised it has not caused an major storm from the professional users.

@nick.ni - when you at some point finally implement this, there should then also be the option to include linked designs, so you can create a self-containing folder with new copies of everything needed for that design.

Thanks

@hoegge Don't know if this is mentioned above but if you download the 2d drawing you will get an f3z file containing all the designs linked to it. So if you have a 2d drawing of an assembly with linked designs everything will be included in the f3z file.

A bit of a long winded workaround, download the f3z then upload to a new project or folder but it should give you what you're after.
