Extruding a projected shape on a curved surface

I am trying to save material by "hollowing" the cylinder. In this case, I tried to project a hexagon and extrude it on the curved surface of the cylinder. After than I could just use a circular pattern and make the cylinder lighter in weight.

However, I found the extrude function is not availabe for projections like this. How should I approach my idea of applying a pattern to use less material?

@wch705

Why are you Projecting to cylindrical face?

Simply Extrude - cut 2D sketch and the Circular Pattern of the Feature.

Why not use simple Polygon for the hex sketch?

Or do you want the cuts to taper towards the center?

Yes I do want the cut taper towards the centre, although it is not important in my use case, I do want to know how to achieve it.
For the hexagon, I wasn't aware there was a tool for it and now I have learnt,thanks

Thank you very much. You have taught me alot by providing different approaches.
