Editing a Rotated Sketch

Hoping this is a basic question and I'll slap myself when someone sends the answer.

A sketch created on the XZ plane:

I select it and rotate it 30°, choosing the origin point as the pivot

ScreenSnapz005.jpg

Now when i go to edit the sketch, none of the points will move.

I suspect this is because the sketch is still referencing the xz plane it was created on. So how do i make the rotation and still have the sketch be editable?

Undo your move.

Create new plane. (in history before the sketch)

Redefine the sketch plane.

Just to clarify, did you rotate the sketch while editing the sketch, or did you rotate the sketch by rotating the entire component?  If you were in the edit sketch mode and rotated it, then it basically made it a 3d sketch (as it is no longer in the plane that you sketched it in), and 3d sketching in fusion is wonky.  So you probably wont be able to edit the curves anymore.  At least, when i tried in the past it never worked for me.

Thanks for your reply. When I use this method, the sketch attaches to the plane in an odd way:

Is there a way to keep my original orientation? I'd just like the sketch to rotate around the z axis, with the whole thing anchored around that origin point.

I've never been able to successfully do it when curves are involved. Straight lines usually work okay.
Why not just create a plane at the angle you want then make the sketch on that?

Flip Normal on the new workplane.

Oops, I see that your sketched rotated in a way that is different than Flip Normal will solve.

Aren't you using dimensions relative to the origin?

Maybe someday Fusion will have Sketch Blocks.

jeevesme - the rotation was to the entire component. I just tried it while inside Edit Sketch, and ended up with the same result (no ability to go back and edit the sketch later). Should I be using the Move/Copy command to perform the rotation, or is there a better method?

1. No.

2. Do it right from the start.

JD - to answer your question, in this case there is no right or wrong way, only what looks better or worse (art project, not engineering). I'd like to be able to make small tweaks as I go. Was hoping there would be a simple way to change the rotation of a component and still be able to edit its curves. I will investigate your question regarding dimensions being relative to the origin - I'm still learning the basics of the software. Thanks for the tips!

If you are rotating the entire component, then it should work fine . . . . see screen-cast.  Also, if you are using it more for art, you should look into sculpting mode.

Thank you, jeevesme, this solved it! I was not rotating the entire component, just the spline. I didn't know I needed to set up the sketch inside a new component first.
