What means "fails"? Do you get any error messages? Does your AutoCAD crash? What happens exactly?
If you get messages then please show them to us, easier to find the source of the problem then.
If AutoCAD crashes then watch your memory load, maybe it's just too few memory in your system.
Every information you can give might help us to support you.
I have not had a problem with large images, but in most cases I use other formats (for large images ECW), so you might try to convert your TIFF to PNG or JPG or even to TIFF with another compression and see if you can load that.
