snap to horizontally or vertically align with a point

Is there a way to make a snap align with a point horizontally or vertically? For aligning with a line, I can do this with the "extension" osnap. However I would like to additionally be able to (for example) draw a line where the endpoint is lined up with (but not touching) the quadrant of a circle, or other point or shape that "extension" does not apply to.

I currently draw a line tangent to the circle, and then snap to the extension of the line, but that triples the amount of steps required. (Draw tangent line, draw actual object, delete tangent line.)

It's called Object Snap Tracking (F11).

Thanks, that's exactly what I was looking for! I seemed to recall that being the default behaviour on our PC's before we had an office-wide re-install, and then when it was gone I started to wonder if I'd imagined it!

P.S. Make sure it shows up in your status bar. Click on the 3 bars icon in the lower right and select object snap tracking.

I think this is the root cause of the problem, in a way. On our old version of ACAD, the various buttons had text labels, so their function was obvious. Now, even with the button present on my status bar, and knowing what it does, there's no mental connection between the icon and what it does. "Object snap tracking" is not something that lends itself to a tiny bitmap picture unfortunately.

If you hover over it, a tooltip will appear.

Fair enough. Honestly, I'm not sure what the icon picture is trying to convey. Presumably the dot is an acquired point, but it doesn't appear to line up with anything. Ie., it is not for example, directly above the midpoint of the horizontal line.

It looks like the midpoint of the slanted line. What really matters though, is do you understand how to use it?

Yes, I've used it in the past, on a much older version of ACAD. When I couldn't find it on this version, I was wondering if it was either gone or I'd misremembered how the command worked. Thanks for the assist.

You can also use >Coordinate Filters< to accomplish this.
