OVERKILL - Can I 'protect' lines a specific layer?

Is there any way of working with OVERKILL that would make it possible to 'protect' lines on a specific layer? I have tried running it with the 'keep' objects on a locked layer, but it doesn't delete anything, and I have also tried it with the lines i want to keep brought to the front of the draw order, but it seems to be rather random in deciding which lines to remove. There's a roughly 50/50 mix of 'front' items and 'back' items left after the OVERKILL command.

Any tips on how I could achieve this would be greatly appreciated...
