Hi,
I'd like to ask if when i open AutoCAD and click on Open File Dialog Window > Look in: | Drop Down List, AutoCAD freeze for certain minute. I've tried almost related articles, forum threads and blogs that I can find and still I cannot resolve the issue. Is it normal because their are at least 6 network drives on the list and other local path. Is there a way the I can removed or modify the items on the drop down list.

Do you mean button "OPEN"? if yes I cannot find any "look in" there.
Or you mean that this diaolog box loads normally, but when you click on dropdown list of browsing to another location - it hangs for a while? Is the file that is already opened located on your computer or on the network?
Will it hang if you close all your dwg files
put any dwg file to desktop
then open it through the open dialog window
I suppose that previously you opened file through network, and it looks for that place, now it will remember the last opened place as desktop, and will not search the network...
and try again - will it be faster?
just for try if no other solutions

- Yes
"when you click on dropdown list of browsing to another location - it hangs for a while?"
- Yes
"Is the file that is already opened located on your computer or on the network?"
- I'm not sure if it open or not, the user have DWG on the local computer and on the network
"Will it hang if you close all your dwg files"
- I'm not sure how they access their DWG file
What I'm thinking is its check or verify the network drives for a while that why it freeze. I'm not sure, i have not idea yet how does AutoCAD file/open system works in a network. or it just a bug, because when I test the AutoCAD in an administrator account. the problem was is not happening.

Hi,
>> because when I test the AutoCAD in an administrator account. the problem was is not happening
Than can have two reasons:
- the user has less permissions than the administrator
- the user is working with anohter AutoCAD profile than the admin, maybe it's defect or it points to folders which do not exist (or access to them restricted)

thanks Alfred
"the user has less permissions than the administrator"
- I granted the user a local admin rights on his computer.
"maybe it's defect or it points to folders which do not exist (or access to them restricted)"
- I'll go with the network folders that restrict the user, because when the user login at the first time after a reboot of power on. One of the start up was a command prompt saying that the user's AutoCAD was grated to access this said network drive.

Hi,
having admin permissions does not automatically start AutoCAD in admin-mode!
And the answers about network drives does not solve the issue that the user might have a defect AutoCAD profile or has some folders set which do not exist!
Let AutoCAD start with a new profile and see if the timing problem exists too.

Hi,
The next step is: search for the differences.
Sorry that I can't give any more tips now as I don't know what you exactly mean by "created a network user" and so don't know what is really different and what might be the same (like login-scripts, basic files and registry content equal or different for users).
If that is too complex maybe let the user run within the new user context?
Good luck, - alfred -

We've figured out the problem, its the compressed file on the dropdown list. all is set now.

Hi,
was that a large file?
At least thank you a lot for presenting the solution, hopefully it's a help for others too.

this is not the only possible reason, compressed file, or a broken link in the quick menu on the left or maybe something else like this. It freezes because it automaticaly tries to read something and there is something that program is trying to understand. Just imagine if you were drunk or had a bad sleep and when you awake in the morning somebody is asking you to say who is now the president of for example Estonia. Probably you will ignore it and go back to sleep.
Moral is that all links should be alive and files in quick menus or bookmarks should be kept simple as much as possible. But maybe something else is there happening to your program.

thanks, but you're being just as vague.
i understand the gist. i hit Look In pulldown and it locks - bcuz it doesn't like something it sees in that list.
but if it's locking, i can't even see what's on the list to know where to start looking.
is there registry setting or something to reset that list? or to change where it's looking?
i need a fix and i can't find one anywhere. it's ridiculous at this point.

Pretty sure you are no longer having issues but you can try this if it happens again.
Open Autocad and type REMEMBERFOLDERS and set it to 0.
Open a file in one of your network projects (browse to it) and SAVE the file.
Type REMEMBERFOLDERS and set it back to 1.
Save the file again.
Test OPEN to see if it resolves the issue.
It occurred for us when working feverishly and MS Group Policy refreshes the drive letters. It does it on its own schedule but it disconnects/reconnects the drive letters for a millisecond or two. If you happen to be saving or opening, the problem begins.

Okay, I have a user experiencing this issue as well. Saying that the compressed file in the list was the problem is great! I have some of those too! The issue I've got is that I have no idea how to remove files like that from this list in particular. It's not a temp file and it doesn't have an option to remove it from the options>Open or Save tab. Where else can I look. The REMEMBERFOLDERS 0 command did nothing to change this list which is taking almost a full list to open because of compressed folders being listed. How do I clear this list? Or remove objects from it? Where is it saved? View Screenshot for the list I'm trying to clean up.

You can't have any .zip files on your desktop. If you do they will show on the "Look In:" drop down list. I think this is symptom from a change in Windows on how it handles .zip files.
