Below is a screenshot of the problem. I am trying to trim the two vertical lines that intersect the horizontal line. One is selected. I cannot trim this line; it says "no intersections in the interior of this curve". I've tried flattening the lines, drawing another line/poly line over the horizontal line shown and trimming, without success. This drawing had been worked on by another person in another (unknown to me) program(s), so I'm guessing that's part of the problem.

Hi,

Can you please upload the dwg-file?
As you already have tried some options it would be easier to have the geometry on our systems instead of guessing.
Please also start AutoCAD command _ABOUT and show us a screenshot of that dialog.

Hi,
first please update AutoCAD, it should show version "2018.1.2" your installation has not installed any of the updates.
For your drawing: I see only one situation to trim, the vertical line that is tangential to the arc. And _TRIM works for me in both directions, upwards as well as downwards.

Hi,
sorry, you have white lines (true color 255,255,255) in your drawing, which is quite invisible on white background.
Even worse ... if you work that way you will get troubles plotting that geometry (at least on white paper
).

Hi again,
is this the situation you'd like to trim:
The horizontal line is the cutting edge and the left vertical should be trimmed? Both is working on my side.
Just be careful about the vertical line(s) ... these are 2 overlapping objects, so you need to use trim twice, or first remove one of these vertical lines.

Hi there,
Sorry about the confusion with the white lines. That's how I was taught, to work with white lines on a black background, and the the white would plot in black.
It is working for me now, too! I think it was just a stupid moment for me and not an actual problem. Thank you so much for your time!

Hi,

That would work for color index 7 (the colors between 1 and 255), but not for true-color values.

Hi,
does that happen when you use the Autodesk Desktop App?
If not, then please use the Autodesk Desktop App to find and to install the updates.

Hello,
When using the desktop app, it began to install, then failed. It says "The system cannot find the path specified".

Hi,
>> When using the desktop app, it began to install
Which update, there exist more than one.
>> It says "The system cannot find the path specified".
Did it also show you the path that is missing? Have you verified if that is really missing or maybe you only don't have enough permissions ... or maybe your antivirus software blocked the download of the setup files?
So you now have a folder C:\Autodesk, is that true?
Within the folder you should find a subfolder (or more) with the current date, which subfolders do you have?
These subfolders, which were created today, should contain the setup files of the update. You might be able to try to start them manually.
